As you may or may not know for the last few years I have been collecting old aviation photos and now it is time to start digitising them. As my collection includes a large number of Whites (copy) negatives (3000+) I have decided to get a top-end photo scanner to do them justice but trying to find information is turning out to be a bit of a drag, the vast majority of info being on domestic scanner/printer combos. So far the best reasonably priced scanner that I have found so far is the Microtek Scanmaker i800 (9600x4800 dpi) for $670ish, what other options are there out there?

For what it is worth: For the last many years I have been flogging a Scanmaker X12 USL and it is going strong. The updates to ScanWiz are worthwhile to keep up with, although any new additions may be obscure. The only problem I have with this venerable scanner now (useful due to its Legal Paper scan size) is that Microtek will not make scanner drivers for Vista for this model. I gather that the latest model you think of buying will be Vista compatible?

Have you thought of a second hand high end one off Trademe? There have been a couple of Nikon ones going in the last month or so. There retail when new was in the $2000 - $3000 bracket but on Trademe they were between $500 and $800. They have software that removes dust etc while scanning. If your scanning 35mm negative and slide they would be ideal. Probable able to get the latest drivers too.
