This movie is due for release in Australia (and, I presume NZ too?) this week. Lt Dieter Dengler was a USN Skyraider pilot who was shot down over Laos in 1966, and this film is based on his experiences as a captive of the Pathet Lao and the North Vietnamese, and his later sucessful escape from captivity. Lt Dengler is played by Christian Bale, who played the role of Jim (the annoying kid!) in "Empire of the Sun. Might be worth seeing? rescuedawn.mgm.com/

Well, hopefully it won't be any worse than some of the 'realism' depicted in "Flyboys" or "Pearl Harbor (sic)". Why is it that Hollywood Directors/Producers/Screenwriters think that by using heaps of computer animation it gives them the right to make a story completely unbelievable? "Flyboys" could have been a very good movie, but some of the silly stuff added to the storyline really ruined it for me - like shooting another pilot through the eye with a revolver whilst flying alonsgside in another plane! I guess I'll just have to wait and see when the dvd arrives.

When this movie was advertised here in the U.S. a few months ago, I was very anxious to go see it. The trailers and the website seemed very promising. It was limited release, and no theaters near me. I considered driving down to Santa Monica to see it, but did not have the time.
I saw it on a flight two weeks ago. I am glad I did not spend the time and money. I would have been disappointed.
The film is "ok", but wait for the DVD or pay per view. If you see it at the theater go during off price hours.
The Dengler story is real, but as usual the producers/writers/directors took "artistic license" and point out its only "based upon" a true story.
In particular, the way a couple of his fellow prisoners are portrayed is questionable. I googled and read more about Dengler and his fellow escapees. They deserved a more realistic treatment. Dengler's escape and survival was an epic, and I believe he went on to provide information that was used in SERE type schools for the U.S. services. His american co-captives are not given a very nice spin in the movie (Dengler hero- his comrades cowards, or very skittish at the least). Dengler debunked those things himself while living, and others close to the story were incensed at how the others were treated.
Dengler was interviewed serveral times over the years, but passed away before the movie was done.
Do not expect accurate aviation terminology or period military representation. Its not horrible, but not good either.
Its worth seeing, the story of survival is what "saves" the show.
