Does anyone know any of the details of the MIL 8 Crash in the South Island? during logging operations. A friend of mine (Dave Ashworth) was killed in it. I don't know the date but I think it's the only MIL 8 crash in NZ

Was that particular accident the one where there was some conjecture that it may have been caused by strobe effect?

I think the found in the end it was failure of one of the dynamic components. Hidden in the Russian service manuals and somehow skipped during translation was the requirement to reduce the cycle life of key components when the aircraft had been used for underslung load operations. This adjustment had never been applied and many components were well beyond lifespan. The adjustments were carried out on the other helicopter and as a result so many components were beyond life that it was beyond economical repair - this second helicopter is the one at Huka falls - ironically the rotor head currently fitted to it was off the crashed machine (presumably the original was sent away for exchange or assessment)

I've heard that the one on display at the Huka Falls was once Fidel Castro's personal transport?

For anyone interested, I have just posted some recent photos of YS-1006P at Huka Falls along with some history (including the Castro connection) in the NZ Aircraft Walkaround subforum (link). Does anyone else have photos of either 05 or 06 prior to 06 becoming a gate guardian? EDIT: I've just found a website (link) with airframe histories of both the ex-El Salvadoran Mi-8s which, amazingly, includes a photo of the ill-fated YS-1005P in Nicaraguan camouflage.
