Inspired by an idea of Andrew's (Citabria) a while ago, I had a bit of a play today using my mini dv camera attached to a borrowed lighting clamp from work and clipped to the top of the instrument panel in a Robin. Simple setup and operation, push record - clamp to panel - go flying. Given the size of the clamp (designed to hold studio lights) and the amount it juts back from the panel (about 6 inches), this setup wouldn't work for safety reasons if there was a passenger so in that respect it's still a work in progress. I'm quite happy with the result as the whole thing seemed quite stable even when pulling a few g and coping with the hammering the aircraft was getting in some lovely wind shear conditions that were up here today .... not all my landings are carrier landings like in the tape, honest ;D As I had to head to work reasonably soon after landing, I didn't have time to edit anything at home but I've dumped some footage onto my work pc and put some shots together in Windows Movie Maker - n.b. the occasional picture breakups occured during the transfer (tired old computer) and are not on the original tape. Cheers, Stu.

I like that you used ALL the runway for takeoff. Nice video to get that view - especially of the good landing.
BTW can you stop that propellor getting in the way? ;D

Thanks all. Not the smoothest of flights considering the wind, I'm looking forward to trying it on a calm sunny day (a day like today for example). Considering all my time in a Robin has been in the left seat, it's interesting to see how far left of the centreline the plane seems from the camera position. On initially watching the tape, I thought I was way off to one side of the runway but the nosewheel "centreline thumps" on the landing roll say otherwise. I've done a version without the transfer glitches this morning .... Way cool, dude. Four yurtles of approval for that! ;D Cheers, Stu.

Very nice I bet that tree by the fence at Te Kowhai encourages a correct approach Cheers, Stu.

Great video there Stu. It's certainly very smooth, lacking vibration. Did you pack the camera with some sort of damper in the bracket to eliminate vibration? Or are those aircraft pretty much rattle-free?
Off to watch Phillip's clips now... damn slow dial up.

Interesting clips Phillip. I guess there is never night flying at Te Kowhai with that tree there.

Great video there Stu. It's certainly very smooth, lacking vibration. Did you pack the camera with some sort of damper in the bracket to eliminate vibration? Or are those aircraft pretty much rattle-free? Off to watch Phillip's clips now... damn slow dial up. I should have taken a photo for reference. The Robin probably vibrates and rattles as much as similar aircraft however the clamp has rubber feet in the jaws so they probably acted as a damper. I used a screw with a thread that matched the tripod adaptor to attach the camera to the underside of the clamp - indicated by the arrow - via a convenient hole (in the clamp). The whole lot then just clamped on to the right hand hold on top of the panel. Cheers, Stu.

TeKowhai is a lovely place with the nicest people. I did my training there and days when you use 23 are much easier on the nerves. Even after 50 landings on 05 it still gives me a little anxiety as you shave the tree. As you can see in that video I still only touched down in the middle of the "spot". Aircraft is a Remos
NOTAM will be up soon but pass on to your mates that TeKowhai 05 is now officially Righthand. Most of us down there have been doing righthand for a while now anyway which can surprise people flying in. There are still no landing fees there but Max appreciates you buying fuel or dropping a coin in the jar.

Tiger stripe cammo, equally at home at sea and on land, unafraid of white cats and little girls. Stu, what you have here is no plodding Nato rear-echelon "no hostilities for me" type, but a full-on Marine Force Recon turtle. Semper Yurtle!

Was fine tuning some audio and video editing software on the pc this morning so a "directors cut" of the camera test was in order. Essentially the same but with an extra climb and turn to the left - whoohoo - and some cheesy music mixed in (anyone remember the theme to Buckaroo Banzai ... or Buckaroo Banzai for that matter? ;D) Anyhow, might as well share it ..... s85.photobucket.com/albums/k52/stu_65/?action=view¤t=fly2.flvCheers, Stu.

Played around with a pencil cam that I bought off TradeMe...requires a vidcam that will accept an analog input...used a Sony PC5e for these 2 vids...camera is secured in the luggage locker by both bungy and 100mph tape. nz.youtube.com/watch?v=E3AGhlxnjdY...and had a little more time to make one from the Nationals...taken over 3 different flights with 3 different angles...taped to my helmet, taped to the canopy frame, and taped to the side of the radio stack... nz.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjyQlgRnqLsP.S. took 3 flights to get a decent set of figures!!!
