This photo of a Hudson appeared in NZ Wings in March 1992 and ever since it has baffled me. I have never seen any follow up to identify it in susequent issues. It is at least mid-war judging by the roundel and has seen service in the forward area judging by the lack of squadron codes (which were removed when they went forward). It is still an operational reconnaissance bomber, not a transport, as it has its turret in place. The mudflats don't look like the Whenuapai or Hobsonville area. It could maybe be around Nelson. Or Gisborne with the GTF? Maybe elsewhere. It looks like it was recoverable and I assume was recovered as nothing matches disposals that I can find for a Hudson being rtp'd after a forced landing on mudflats. Does anyone here have any further clues as to the place, date, crew, squadron/school, duty, etc?

Dave,
I believe that it was a No.4 GR Squadron aircraft out of Nelson that landed on the mudflats near nelson. Will look up the accident records for you

Thank you Paul. What was a 4GR Hudson doing at Nelson? Home for maintenance perhaps?
