When the Bristol Freighter ZK-EPF was prepared for use in the Walt Disney Coporation film 'The Recue' was it painted into the red and orange colour scheme it wore with red stars by the RNZAF? Or did SAFE Air paint it?
Does anyone rememebr seeing this film being made? Do you have any photos of the aircraft in that odd scheme or the film being made?
Or what about the other war/aviation films that have been made in NZ, like 'Which Way Home' or 'The Race For The Yankee Zephyr' or 'The Last Tattoo' or Absent Without Leave', etc? Did anyone here have anything to do with these films, especially on the aviation side?

Without delving further I can't remember of hand but some other snippets about the movie. The RNZAF C -130s used only had US markings applied to one side,. The Corsair that was at The RNZAF Museum was donated by Disney as part of the deal to have RNZAF cooperation. A Queenstown get rich quick merchant purchased the "North Korean Village" in the mountains behind Queenstown with the idea of making a tourist attraction and theme park out of it but didn't take into account the temporary nature of movie lot construction and by the time he got around to starting to do something it was all falling down and he had to abandon the idea.
The nose from the Yankee Zephyr was a Wigram in the late 70s or early 80s. It was over by the GSTS building .

I have The Rescue on DVD. A complete shocker of a film but with some of the most amazing and/or only stunt flying you'll ever see a Bristol Freighter perform. The deadstick landing and groundloop at Whenuapai is particularly interesting. American airshow pilot Corky Fornoff did much of the flying in an around Queenstown. A friend of mine Mike Smith spent time in the jump seat during some of these flights. He said that he was made more nervous about the nature of the flying when Corky responded, "Don't worry about those mountains, I've yet to show you my world-famous Corky Fornoff reversal turn...." At times he had to remind Corky that he was no longer flying his Bearcat! As I say, The Rescue is a 'made-for-VHS' feature but certainly has its moments.

Regarding the Corsair gift for help with the film, I have always heard it was The Rescue that the Corsair was donated for. However a Waikato Times article from 17 Sep 1987 states Disney gifted it for the RNZAF's help with a film called "Seals". Was this the same film and was perhaps a working title? The Rescue wasn't released till 1988 so might have been a working titles.
No film from 1987-88 called Seals pops up on IMDb.

I can just imagine the film producers sitting around trying to figure out what they could find in New Zealand that would pass with the general public as a North Korean freighter!

You missed one! “Solo” staring Devina Whitehouse and Maxwell Fernie (Max was the Director of Music and Organist at St Mary of the Angels in Wellington for several decades, as well as the Wellington Town Hall Organist, and a music tutor at Victoria University, and an occasional actor). It was a really neat film with some lovely flying sequences involving a Tiger Moth.

Hi Guys. I know a fair bit about this film. The 2 pilots of the Freighter were Gordon Thompson and my late brother Peter Johnson. Peter did most of the spectacular flying around the Southern Alps and also the sequences at Whenuapai with the dead stick landing and ground loop. The Canadian bush pilot who flew the camera plane(NOT the Bristol!) commented that " you guys are crazy!"My brother Pete was killed in a crash at Mangere when the Convair he was command captain on suffered a structural failure and crashed at the end of the runway. Strange that the accident report blames the pilots!!(there's a surprise.) He was one of the most talented and careful fliers I have ever known and is greatly missed.

Never thought I'd see a frightner flying on one engine and doing a ground loop. That was shot around hobbit country - where were all the orcs and hobbits? ;D ;D

Actually quite funny, I enjoyed the corny bit of filming, especially the powerless landing, flaps doing a lot of work, the safe ground loop etc. Seeing the A-4K's with 20deg of elevation just to slow down to fly with the Freighter on one engine... and the lovely radial sound too!! Thanks vgp.

Hello, so who was flying the Bristol, Corky Fornoff or Peter Johnson? Was Corky Fornoff American or Canadian? My mother was an extra on The Rescue and my American mates came over to do the skydiving sequences. One of them may visit soon and I was just refreshing my memory on the aircraft etc. thanks.
