The father of a family friend recently passed away. He was an avid aviation fan and had many many photos. Our friend is getting across from Wellington as often as she can, to help her mother sort out her fathers things. She is aware of my "aviation addiction" so as a result I am being given albums to scan into my collection, before returning to the family. Therefore you can all benefit as I will put some of the more interesting photos and the ones I need to identify online for everyone to enjoy. The current album seems to be photos from airshows at Omaka, Wanaka, Wigram, Harewood and several other locations. Here is a small taste of what is to come as I continue to scan the current album. Air Albatross Metro at ? Qantas 747-238B wearing Melbourne commonwealth games titles at Christchurch Large helo at Nelson Monospar ST 25 at Wigram Fletcher wearing Trans - Tasman commemerative flight titles at Wigram Skyferry Beech Excalibur at Koromiko Se5a at Wigram? Spit on a pole at Christchurch?

Wonderful, thanks for posting these.
That's one of the smaller SE5a replicas, I think 4/5 scale or something odd. There were a few around in the 1980's - 1990's, ZK-TOM was one of them.
And yes that's the Harewood Spitfre, TE288, now in Wigram.

First query for today - there are 10 photos from an airshow at Woodbourne. Juding by the clothes and hair it looks like early 80s. Does anyone who was stationed at Woodbourne remember this event, when it was and what the reason for it was? Nice photos. The Metro in photo one could be at Nelson. It's an early Metro with three-blade prop and the gear doors hang down when the gear is extended. Later Metros of course have four-blade props and the gear doors sit flush with the nacelle after the gear has extended.

I like the larger size but the medium is fine too.
I've never seen that side of TE288 before. Brilliant.

Joe - I think you're right about that metro being at Nelson. I have found some more photos futher on in the album of an Ansett NZ DHC-8-102 and Ansett Air Freight F27 at nelson during an airshow/open day of some kind. Looks like the same time as the photo of the metro.
Dave - I perfer the medium size photos but can post more in both medium and large depending - have some good ones coming up in the album. I like the shot of TB863 - the colour just does something for it

Just a quick poll which photo size is better? The large size in post 1, small in post 3, or this size??? I definitely prefer the medium size, but anything below 800x600 is OK. If you go any bigger it goes off the edge of my screen and I have to scroll sideways.

Thanks for posting all these images, nzompilot: they are an excellent sample of NZ aviation through the 1970 and 1980s.
Brings back great memories of Summer days spent at the Wigram Wings and Wheels shows throughout the 1980s.

For the record, Airtrainer is also one word (although i have read a letter written by a certain Chief of Air Staff where even he spelled it incorrectly! hmmm)
Great photos. Do my eyes decieve me or are the Airtrainer, Iroquios and Strikemaster sitting on the village green at Wigam, rather than the airfield? Note the angle of No. 2 Officer's Mess in the background. I may be wrong.

I reckon its the top end of 40 acres, Dave. Block would be the end of No 1 Mess. Can also see what looks like the NDB mast and perhaps the VDF tower above the beacon of the Huey? Also the VDF tower is visible in the Freighter shot. On the assumption the Freighter, Devon, Blunty and Huey were all snapped on the same day, I would say that they are about where a museum is located these days! Also appears to be a line of silver birches which thread there way down the road to the main gate...
That's my thoughts

The Fletcher ZK-USU and the Monospar (at least) would have been taken at the Wigram air show in September 1978. Cliff Tait flew ZK-USU (as a comparison with VH-USU!) from Wigram to Australia and back 9th/10th September 1978 in 27hrs 2mins.

An F-111 wouldn't have landed at Wigram, would it? Harewood more likelly.
