Am I correct in thinking that the P-39Q that is nowadays flying with The Fighter Collection at Duxford, which was rescued from PNG by Charles Darby and Monty Armstrong, was actually on display for a while at MOTAT?
Or am I confusing this with the P-47 wreck that MOTAT got from them?

Isn't the P47 being restored in Aus?

Robert Greinart is restoring several P-47s at the Illawarra Regional Airport, including the ex-MoTaT/RNZAF Museum one.

I wonder how much of the actual P-47 aircraft will make it into the 'restored' version. It had no innards, and was structurally supported with a lot of fibreglass and 4x2 timbers when it arrived at Wigram.
I'd think it'll be a new build P-47 with a few pieces tacked on including dataplates, and they'll claim it is the world's oldest (or now second oldest) extant P-47...

I have some similar shots of the aircraft sitting in the same state between 6 and 7 Hangars when it arrived at Wigram in 1993.

Talking P47 (I posted a shot of the P39 in Shortys thread), heres a couple I took at Motat, in the "storage area" at Meola Rd, about 1979-80. The wing photo is actually 2 photos taped together.....

Blimey, I can see why they cobbled it together with wood. It was a bit of a mess, eh.
