I spent an enjoyable few hours searching the Marlborough Express archives from November 1938 the other day on Dave's behalf. Found the following newsworthy pictures in the pages, which I thought someone might be interested in ....

Great cuttings there Craig. Yes indeed the newspapers of those days were utterly full of aviation from around the world, I've always enjoyed looking back through the NZ Herald and more especially the Auckland Weekly news for those days, lots of items of interest.
I wonder if that airliner 'Frobisher' went on to RAF service when war broke out, it's a real piece of class, isn't it?
On the other hand those Vultee bombers (Are they Vengeances?) look outdated even as new, the Americans were really behind the ballgame in aviation design before the war imho. It was only when the RAF started ordering from them with modern specifications for things like the Hudson, Ventura and Mustang that they seemed to wake their ideas up.
Nice to see the Rearwin. Is that the one being restored to fly right now? I wonder how that project is coming. Any news?
Does the caption imply those are British paratroops in photo one? I didn't think they formed the Pars till about 1941 after the Gerries had shown them how easy it was to take fortified locations from the air. Sir Cyrl Newell that's mentioned went on in 1941 to become our Governor-General.

The DH Albatross "Frobisher" was destroyed in an air raid on Bristol in 1940. Those Vultees are A 11s and appear to have Brazilian markings ZK -AKF is being restored by A Payne The caption on the paratroopers photo reads that it is a display made at Rheims Military aerodrome for the RAF mission to France. I read that as being a display by French troops.

So the French had paratroops then. I never knew that. Rheims became an RAF Hurricane base in 1939-40.
