What ever happened to the Hawker Tempest/s that New Zealand pilot Dougal Dallison appraently owned in 1986. He was having one restored in the UK with a Wright Cyclone engine replacing its Centaurus according to a report in the Nov 86 NZ Wings, which also said he was about to import another warbird not unlike a Sea Fury to NZ, but didn't say what.
Is he still alive? Does anyone know anything about this chap? Was he a businessman who lost it all in the 1987 crash perhaps?

Dave, dont know anything about a Hawker Tempest. He had other aircraft though. The now Alpine Fighter Collection Chipmunk and Fouga ZK-FGA were his aircraft.
Another story but a Syndicate bought the Fouga.A bunch of us went in Barry Keays Devon to Whenuapai one Sunday to pick up the Fouga that they had juts bought from Dougals wife. One flight in it and then Trevor Bland flew it back to Ardmore.Great memories!

Pretty sure Dougal imported the first Wilga into NZ as I remember him showing a few of us around the first one when he bought it to Omaka several years ago. He was a great guy thats for sure.

Yes, I believe he was the Wilga agent. But it's the Tempest and the other warbird I'm wondering about. I don't know if the article meant the Fouga Magister because it alluded to it being not unlike the Sea Fury. And a Fouga is unlike everything.

I briefly met Dougal Dallison when I first went to Whenuapai. He had served with the RAF, and then bought a property at Whenuapai just off the threshold of 08. While still in the UK he had bought the Chipmunk G-AMUH, and brought that over with him in 1988 so it became ZK-MUH (the Chipmunk was sold and is now Wanaka-based). Also in his baggage around that time was the ARV-1 Super 2 that became ZK-FSQ. This was unsuccessful, and returned to the UK as G-BSRK. Rather more successful was his PZL agency, with five Wilga and one Koliber arriving. There were a couple of helicopter imports during the late-1980s as well. The Fouga was of course the most well-known of his aircraft, and the last import before his sudden death in 1998.
As I heard it, he had been to the aviation doctor that day for renewal of his medical certificate. No problems were found, and they parted with the usual see-you-later. After dinner that evening, he and his wife sat down to watch telly. A couple of hours later she said "well I think I'll be off to bed now" and got no response. He had died while sitting there. Makes you ponder on the effectiveness of health checkups, doesn't it.

If I remember correctly .... Dougal also had a 'batch' down at Taupo. The bograts on 3 Sqn used to get weekend navex's to Taupo (all accomodation paid), as long as they took a lawnmower and paintbrushes with them! The odd carcass of venison would be returned to Hobby on Sunday afternoon...... ;D Those were the days!

I reckon he had probably retired by 1988 and had perhaps returned to the UK to pick up the Chippie?
Love your Lanc pic, btw. Very Smart! Was that an RNZAF neg?

I didn't even know he was RNZAF or that he was dead. What a pity. I guess his mystery plane never got here.
