I'm confused: does this mean that there isn't going to be a Top Gun 2, or there will be a Top Gun 2 - but without Tom Cruise in it? Val 'Iceman' Kilmer was better than Tom-the-Scientologist anyway, so bring him back instead! Tom Cruise will not be doing ‘Top Gun 2’updated 6:02 p.m. ET July 22, 2008. Paramount spokesperson says there’s ‘no way’ Cruise is returning to role. Sorry “Top Gun” fans, it appears Tom Cruise returning to the franchise has not been cleared for take off. Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting Cruise was in line to reprise his role as Maverick in the fighter jet film, 22 years after the original. However, “Access Hollywood” has confirmed those reports are false. When contacted by “Access,” a spokesperson for Paramount (which released “Top Gun” in 1986) said there was “no way” Cruise would be returning to the role. In addition, a rep for Cruise also told “Access” the reports of a Maverick reprisal are completely untrue. According to the erroneous reports, the sequel would have seen Cruise’s character returning to Top Gun school as a flight instructor. Fans can catch Cruise on the big screen in a brief cameo in the upcoming comedy “Tropic Thunder,” which hits theaters Aug. 13.

What no "Top Gun - The Return of Goose"? ;D How about letting George Lucas loose on the script so he could write an 'excellent' prequel based on Maverick's father, and how he defected to the the "dark side" (i.e. the North Vietnamese Air Force) after a dogfight where the enemy "were all over the sky like fireflies"?

Me too. I think Top Gun had it's day, it's been done, let it lie. The new MiG would probably be an aggressor F16 or something like that, and let's face it, beach volley ball played by a bunch of posers in the sunset is not very sun-smart in our 21st century world.

The original Top Gun turned out to be the best recruiting campaign for the US Navy since WWII. Scarily, that first lot of dumbass kids who Tom Cruise inspired through scripted lines and hollywood stunts to run away and join up with the Navy in the 1980's are now running the US Navy.
These days if a second film caused a huge influx of dumbass teens to join because Hollywood inspired them, then god help the innocents in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and British road columns.

Dave, that is a bit of a stretch. You can make the same case for the dumbasses running your military today (or mine) which is really silly. If movies had that power we would be run by bad Hollywood actors etc. Hang on "I'll be back" runs California. Creepy. AND Reagan was running USofA back in that time. Creepy again. I'll stop now. ;D

Anyone at high school when the movie opened, completed the minimum three year college degree, made into USN aviation and was still in uniform would be lucky to be anything more than a LtCdr. High admiralty and Pentagon jobs are at least of 15 or so years away. As in circa 2023. Does everyone else get this appalling ad banner at the top of the thread?
