Interesting change from the usual tedium on tonight's news ..... www.3news.co.nz/AirbusA380toflybetweenNewZealandandAustralia/tabid/309/articleID/65624/Default.aspx?ArticleID=65624#video"The Airbus A-380 is the world's biggest passenger plane and has been described as being an airborne hotel.
At 73 metres long, 24 metres high and weighing in at a colossal 500 tonnes, the superjumbo is built for size not looks.
And from February next year, New Zealanders travelling to and from Australia will be able to get a chance to fly in one.
Auckland Airport has spent millions of dollars in upgrades to cope with the gargantuan plane, however at this stage, Emirates are the only operator who will be using the aircraft in New Zealand, however in the future other operators may start using the Airbus A-380 as well.
The superjumbo's cavernous lower deck 399 passengers. If both decks were crammed with economy seats, the aircraft would fit 800.
However Emirates are going for luxury rather than economy. A lounge and bar area have been built in the upper deck, along with world-first spa shower units.
However the water used in the showers increases the plane's weight by an extra half a tonne, which in turn burns more fuel.
"These were planned five years ago," Emirates President, Tim Clark says. "Before we had real concerns about the environment."
The first A380 flight is scheduled to arrive in Auckland on the February 2, 2009. The tickets are expected to cost around $16,000 each".3 News

I thought the same thing! It took a while for environmental issues to reach the Middle East it seems. I guess they don't have much problem there with melting ice caps, droughts and global warming.

I love the way everything I read or heard in the media in the last few days, made it sound as if this was the first ever A380 flight. Yes it may have been Emirates first A380 flight but as we all know Singapore have been flying the A380 for a while now and have 5 in service. But I guess it wouldn't have been as attention grabbing if they had said that. Link to above article here

"* Grant Bradley travelled as a guest of Emirates." .... as did, no doubt, our 3 News crew.
Hmmmm ..... do I smell a media junket with only a cursory interest in facts? ;D

They are still looking at the 747 800I as well. Apparently waiting to see wether the new 6 runway airport opens on time. I was in Dubai 2 years ago and they had just added another 30 747 sized gates to the exisiting airport!
