Hey all, I have posted some images of my Cessna 180 that is coming along. I am fighting the urge to hurry it up so I can start work on the ag dak... I am hoping to put it into a rural scheme since I grew up near Te Kuiti and they seemed to be the predominant user of the type. Any tips, pointers or photos welcome

I'm looking forward to this one, the 180 has a special place in my flying career. Where did you get the kit from? Did you go into any detail inside, ie the rotating trim handle on the roof etc?

Thanks for your interest flyjoe180, and no I haven't put the trim handle on the roof but I have a few spare etched ones at home so I will. I added a lunch box, hopper dump handle and an instrument panel to the model as well as the hopper. I have taken a bit of a guess on internal colours, but apparently they changed a bit. I have finished the motor as well, this model has a removable cowl so you can have a look at the working end by simply pulling it off. The model is a revell mongram re-release of their kit from the 1970's. It is in an unusual scale of 1:41. This kit I picked up in Sydney Australia from Hobbyco for around $30. It comes with a classic artwork box. they had quite a few down there when I went past the other day if you are keen. www.hobbyco.com.au/product/show_item.php?plu=RK850123www.frontlinehobbies.com.au/templates/frontlinehobbiescomau_home.aspx?pageID=181box artwork is here www.megahobby.com/productimages/rev/REV123.jpg

I had that Monogram C180 model when I was little, it had the option of being a floatplane or normal configuration. Cheers, looking forward to the completion of your one eighty.

The model is a revell mongram re-release of their kit from the 1970's. Ex monogram from the late '50's, I think. The odd scales were because they made the models to fit a standard size box I've still got a Matchbox 32nd scale Tiger Moth, I started converting to an Ag plane, back about 1985.......I've got a third of the way there......

Thanks Flyernzl, once again you come up with the solution to my modelling issues. I might have a go at that rural scheme, seems it will be bright enough for a topdresser.
Pool Guy, the James scheme looks sweet on everything... I agree with you on how nice it looks.
I think after seeing the airtruk and 180 in a James scheme, was there a type that they ever didn't fly? The Lodestar is all I can think of and maybe agwagons/braves (have seen a pawnee marked with the James logo), they defenitely had a ceres for a bit...
Thanks for your help guys!
Cheers Mike

Most of the "odd-ball" James Aviation aircraft came into the fleet when they took over other aviation companys. The Pawnees - and a Cub - came with the purchase of Aerial Farming of Palmerston North, as did the Ceres. And yes, they did have a Cessna A188B Agwagon, ZK-DOZ from Phoenix Aviation, December 1983 thru September 1984 when it went to Jet Spread Aviation Ltd., Taupo. One could argue about the Lodestar. James did not directly operate those, but did have a shareholding in Airland (NZ) Ltd. which operated five of them. I grant you the Brave, though.

Were any of the 180s get modified back to the conventional format after they finished their days as topdressers?

Were any of the 180s get modified back to the conventional format after they finished their days as topdressers? Absolutely, as an example BUG in the pictures above is currently in immaculate condition as a private aircraft (Owned by Hunter McEwan from memory) and is regularly seen all over the country at 180 club fly - ins. I've worked on BUG and possibly BYJ as well during thier non - Ag lives. Close examination of BUG nowadays reveals a slightly non - standard arrangement of the top cabin skins, and some extra formers and framing under the cabin floor. Owners of ex- Ag 180s do have to carry out additional inspections of the leaf spring undercarriage legs (if they are known to have been fitted during the Ag ops) due to additional stresses from that time - Ag and skiplane legs are identifiable by being a little thicker than the original standard legs.

A bit more progress has come along, but other demands are taking a bit of time up at the moment (spring weddings rolling out one after the other!) I thought I will have a go at ZK-BVV which means a bit more surgery is involved. Since last time I have removed the elevators and using wire, reattached these in a resting position. The great thing about this method is that it gives strength, but also the ability to readjust them if they get bumped. Having that bit of a gap and what looks like a hings also adds a bit to the realism. I should add though that once glued the gap is not as large as it looks sitting there! Once again I am lagging though, I can't seem to just do a build anymore . That ag Dak is just sitting there teasing me as well at the moment. Will post some more as they come.

Quite a bit of progress on the weekend, I have a resin hopper ready to go, have added wire brakelines to the undercarriage legs and have even stuck a little compass onto the windscreen. I ahve taken some pictures with the wings tacked on, although I won't put them on for real until the very end. The propellor took some fine surgery as it comes moulded into a spinner, a bit of evergreen styrene and a sharp blade though as it looking appropriately spinnerless. Unfortunately I am still waiting on a new compressor so I am not sure when i will be able to put the paint on, however hopefully later this week. I have some priming to do before then, but so far I am really happy with the fit. For a kit from older moulds, it certainly goes together nice enough! Starting to look right now

Nice work thus far! Can't wait to see it completed. We have a 180 at work for some, um, work, and I can see it with a hopper and hopper box
