Lucky escape for Southland glider pilotSunday, 09 November 2008 An elderly man was left hanging upside down trapped in his glider for about 30 minutes after it crashed in Southland last night. The 70-year-old was on a pilot training exercise when he crashed at Five Rivers, north of Lumsden, just before 7pm. Senior sergeant Dave Raynes of Invercargill police said the glider flipped and the pilot was trapped for about half an hour before he was cut out of the wreckage. The pilot, a retired doctor, was flown to hospital with head, leg and shoulder injuries. Mr Raynes said he spoke to the pilot in hospital this morning and he was in good spirits before minor surgery to his leg today. "He was very positive. He is very lucky to be alive." The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the crash. www.stuff.co.nz/4755100a11.html

Tailwind caused glider crash New 2:52PM Sunday Nov 09, 2008 Lucky escape for Southland glider pilot A glider crash in Southland was caused by a tailwind which robbed the aircraft of lift, police said. Retired doctor William Thomas Ward, 70, was practising takeoffs and landings at Five Rivers, north of Lumsden yesterday evening. He told police that during one landing a gust of wind caught the rear of the plane, "so it's just dropped out of the sky", Invercargill Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes said. The glider flipped and the man was trapped for about 30 minutes as emergency services cut him free from the wreckage. He was flown to hospital where he will undergo minor surgery on a broken ankle today. Mr Raynes said the man was in good spirits and was very happy to be alive. The Civil Aviation Authority was investigating. www.nzherald.co.nz/aviation/news/article.cfm?c_id=556&objectid=10542048&ref=rss
