The 2009 National Gliding Champs are currently being held in Omarama. You can follow the progress each day by look on the spot screen. Some glider pilot have purchased this new technology as an additional safety solution. The device is carried in the cockpit and sends a GPS fix on about 10 minute intervals. In the last few days, race launch times have been around 1500 so you will not see much before then: map.xinqu.net/spot.htmlThe contest directors blog can be viewed here: omarama2009.blogspot.com/

This is amazing technology, and great to see it put to such good use.
Is the equipment very expensive to purchase?

This is amazing technology, and great to see it put to such good use. Is the equipment very expensive to purchase? The units cost $149US but there is an ongoing fee of $99US pa for the space on the satellite. If you follow the link below, click on the contest day, you will see the task set for each day. glidingcomps.42.net.nz/nat2009/If you have a flight analysis program like "SeeYou" you can download the GPS trace for each glider and see how they flew the task. You can download a trial version of SeeYou from here: naviter.si/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9&Itemid=213

Wow, that's not bad - I thought it'd probably be closer to a $1000 or more.
