The chap who owns that building (and the sign business contained in it) is Rick Long. He was the chairman of the Wairarapa Branch of the National Party for many years, and I get the impression he was a real fan of Rob Muldoon. He was also a Wellington Regional Councillor until the last local body elections, when he stood down and instead stood for Mayor of Masterton (after Bob Francis retired), but was beaten by the current Mayor. Rick has a rather hard-case sense of humour and uses that wall with the caricature of Muldoon and associated speech balloon on the mural to comment on issues of the day in a sarcastic sort of way. I live just around the corner from that wall and pass it every day on the way to and from work. They used to paint a different mural on that wall every year, but they've stuck with the current one for about five years now. The Sign Factory

He used to have a butcher's shop, but got out of that trade when the supermarkets started cornering too much of the butchery business. I moved to Masterton in 1998 and Rick Long had switched from butchery to the signs business sometime prior to my move.
