I hadn't been aware of Sukhoi's interest in providing an alternative...
DATE:08/12/99 SOURCE:Flight International Clinton and Sukhoi in RNZAF F-16 debate
US President Bill Clinton has moved to shore up a lease deal for 28 Lockheed Martin F-16s by New Zealand, following the announcement of a review of the deal by New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark.
Clark says Clinton raised the lease's future during a telephone conference on 3 December. Clinton told Clark the lease would be a key agenda item, following the appointment of a new US Ambassador to New Zealand this month.
The announcement of the review has seen moves by Sukhoi to undercut the deal, with company representatives in Australia revealing that an alternative proposal was placed before the New Zealand Labour Party before the 27 November elections. Sukhoi says the offer is a 10-year lease of Su-30s, targeting and navigation equipment, new precision-guided munitions and support equipment at a cost equivalent to the NZ$124.8 million ($63.8 million) lease component of the F-16 deal.
Other F-16-related expense includes a NZ$362.8 million ($182.7 million) aircraft reactivation package. NZ$42 million was allocated by the previous National Party Administration for new navigation and targeting pods, and precision-guided munitions for training purposes.

The best way of obtaining a copy of this pic would be to write to the Central Photographic Establishment at RNZAF Ohakea as they hold all the PR Negatives from that era. Address is:

Paul Those serial numbers you've given above don't seem to tie-in with the split of single and two-seat models being provided.
Out of the 28 airframes, the breakdown was 13 single seats and the remaining 15 being dual seats. I recall that we were to operate all the A models along with 9 B's, with the remaining 6 Bs were for spares and attrition airframes.
Seems like a long time since it was all happening!! Barnsey

That is very interesting about the Sukhoi Su-30 Flanker offer. Man, that would have been interesting to see them in RNZAF colours. I wonder if it was lease-to-own like the F-16 deal.

I've got a copy of that Flight magazine somewhere with the mention of RNZAF Sukhois. I thought it would be a cool idea for a model!

I'm with Corsair on this one. What we really need is hankies with F-16's in RNZAF colours on them.
Gripen would have been an interesting choice.

all good things come to those who wait. I'm eternally optimistic that the RNZAF will one day once again have a strike wing, it may take 20 to 30 years but it'll happen.
