Demos: Westpac Rescue Helicopter, NZ Army Bomb Squad, NZ Customs Sniffer Dogs and Wellington Airport Fire Rescue. There'll also be plenty of food and Caffe L'affare coffee.

Kids Entertainment: Giveaways, bouncy castles, facepainting and rockclimbing. Dress as your favourite emergency service and win spot prizes.

Thanks for the pics.

I took my son down at lunchtime and the BK was away on missions. Just when we thought she was heading back they got called out to a bad car smash at Castle Hill and wasnt expected back between 2 & 3pm. I had to leave before it arrived back but we managed to buy stuff and the other services on display were really interesting.

Anyone else get photos of theirs?? They were really busy at Chch.

I checked out an RNZAF/NZP operation on my local riverbank not too long ago and was firmly directed to ensure I took pictures of the helicopter only (not that I had any intention of doing otherwise, having a fair idea of what they were up to), as well as having my details noted for reference....

Wow, not meaning to sound like a bum but is it just me that thinks this is ok? Seems that the land of the long white cloud is a little more paranoid about things that back in Aus. Weird! I can assure you they were definitely police and I did ask permission. I guess it is no harm as you can't really see who they are to begin with. My gosh, I seem to create trouble on these forums by just taking photos/doing seemingly innocent things and I am only new

Sam mentioned when he was taking photos it was during an operation - it's obvious security will be more tight then as their methods and tactics could be captured on film and used against them. Here it's a public open day where they are inviting the public to take photos and ask questions. Totally different situation.

Good good. If it was during an operation I would not attempt pics LOL. Anyway, don't want to be seen doing the wrong thing. I'll have to get along to another one of those open days though. I only caught the tail end of this one.

Just in case anyone gets the wrong idea, an Iroquois was operating from a public park in the middle of the day about 100m from a four lane highway - not exactly covert! There was a small number of curious onlookers already present when I arrived and while guesses are free I didn't actually suspect anything until I was approached and questioned.

Thats enough of the thread hijack, so I'll leave it at that.

Open day at Mechanics Bay heliport on Saturday as well.
Smallish crowd in attendance, mostly families with kids.

Display helicopters to crawl over were Aerospatiale Twin Star ZK-HDG/2 and Kawasaki BK117 ZK-HLN/3.
Joyrides available at $60 a pop in Squirrel ZK-HXE/3
Static parked were Squirrel ZK-HPA/2 and R44 ZK-HEI/2.

I'm impressed that the New Zealand Police are actually allowed to have a Tactical Response Unit, as I'm sure this would infinge someone's human rights under some obscure UN convention the NZ Govt has probably signed at some stage.
