Does anyone here know about the large scale exercies that came to be known as 'The Battle of Auckland'?
The date seems to have been the 26th of November 1942. The Operations Record Book for No. 1 (GR) Squadron for that day records, "Hudsons 2060, 2062 & 2063 Capts. P/O Thomson P/O Buchanan & P/O Probert provided striking force to attack imaginary enemy force attacking N.Z."
It doesn't sound like much till you realise that it's also recorded that practically all of No. 2 (G.R.) Squadron was temporarily atached to Whenuapai, up fom Nelson, for the exercise (that's a dozen Hudsons!) and that it's also recorded that every operational squadron in the country at that time were involved.
So as well as Hudsons taking part, were the fighter squadrons in on this? Or the Hind Army Co-op squadrons? And perhaps The Vincnets of No's 7 and 8 Squadrons?
I'd love to know more, was the Navy in this exercise too, and the Army? Were the Americans also involved?
