That is very bad news, and a situation that is hard to understand. Is it a case of the studio/producers simply not having or releasing the money to get started?
To be honest, I don't care whether The Hobbit gets made or not. Who cares about yet another cgi fantasy story. I was really looking forward to a true story made well, in the Dambusters film. I fear perhaps this may be the beginning of the end for the long drawn out project saga.

Not ideal. Like you Dave, I'd rather see a new epic historical movie rather than a fantasy film. They all seem the same to me, monsters, goblins and jewellry. Meh, give me a good aerial scene any day.

Yeah true. Great aeroplanes, rubbish acting and plot. A film based on a real historic raid with Mosquitoes would be more to my taste, there were plenty to choose from though the obvius one for added action is Operation Jercho of course.

I think the point is that the effects of the global recession (especially in the West) are contributing to delays/problems in getting movies off the ground. Christian Rivers is not the first movie director to leave a project due to delays, Guillermo del Toro left The Hobbit for similar reasons. I'm quite happy for both The Hobbit and The Dambusters to get made sometime in the (hopefully) near future as it means jobs and publicity for New Zealanders. Frankly the worldwide movie viewing public are more likely to be attracted to The Hobbit, with The Dambusters having more of an appeal in countries like NZ, Australia, Canada, Britain and (perhaps) the US. An investor looking at what movie to place their cash in at the moment will go for The Hobbit due to its link to LOTR and the existing fanbase/interest worldwide. Perhaps there could be more of a delay in securing finance for The Dambusters but I do hope it gets made eventually. It'd be an ideal candidate to be shot in 3D in my opinion.

There must be a massive downturn in the film market when you can only afford a new $68 million personal jet...

There must be a massive downturn in the film market when you can only afford a new $68 million personal jet... Producers bring together the many elements needed to make a movie. Normally, this includes (mainly) other people's money, and commitments from other people to distribute and market the result. A quiet patch in actual movie production can be a good time for a producer to invest in tools to let them do their job more effectively. There is also a good chance the p[lane was a good deal :-)

Yes, and a Vildebeest for shorter trips.
No, my comment was meant more in jest than jealousy. To be honest if I had that sort of money I'd not be buing a personal luxury jet. It would be warbirds that my money was invested into.

The jet looks like it is used to minimise the issues of spending lots of time in NZ and California (and wanting to move clients/financiers/actors etc between the two), which is a consequence of business and lifestyle.

Plus PJ has used his money to buy up commercial property in Mirimar for Weta and other parts of his film production company, including building two brand spanking new sound stages next to the sound stage he built for filming King Kong. I was in Wellington for 4 days in July and did a Wellington 'movie tour'. Amazing to see all the nondescript commercial buildings that are actually part of the PJ 'empire' but from the outside, you'd never know. Anyway. here's hoping the financial issues for these films are resolved sooner rather than later.

He gets his luxury personal jet transport, AND he has a heap of warbirds. Not your common garden-variety WWII warbirds either, but WWI warbirds. That's where The Vintage Aviator comes into the picture.

I suppose it is not a good time to contact Mr Jackson about a film project I've been thinking about for some time? Anyway, here's a little background to my idea: It revolves around two kids who grow up together in a rural part of the US, and who become hooked on flying at a very young age, as the father of one of the boys is a cropduster pilot. Later, when war begins in Europe, one of the boys joins the RAF, and departs for England; leaving his beautiful girlfriend behind in the care of his best buddy. Unfortunately, he is soon posted as missing, presumed dead - and through shared grief the girlfriend and the best friend become lovers. I won't share too much more with you, as I don't want to give all my ideas away, but basically the rest of the movie will revolve around the attack on Pearl Harbor, and a strange, unexpected twist in the story involving the missing pilot. It'll be a classic - I can guarantee you that!
