Unfortunately, Avsim.com, the largest repository of Flightsim addons has been destroyed by hackers whose method of attack makes the likelyhood of recovery very slim. All of my previous work was hosted there so it is definitely a setback for me as well as the other flightsim developers in New Zealand. BBC report here: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8049780.stm

Obviously, Avsims' security measures weren't up to the task. It pays to be protected in this day and age.

Sadly there is a lesson in this for all of us: [Also often the idea is that a website will be a backup for files? Yeah right.]
"Mr Allensworth has set up a temporary forum for Avsim users while the future of the site is decided.
On it, he explained the site's backing up process, although he did not explain why the firm had no external media storage.
"Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers between our two servers.
"The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back up to remedy the situation."

That's pretty disappointing for a hacker to pick on a harmless community site. I hope the old saying "what goes around comes around" applies to the thoughtless piece of excrement who did this.

I had a few things up on AvSim as well, but ah well. At least FS stuff can be recreated, or if you're smart you upload to several sites AND save copies of your projects just in case ;D
