I've just been emailed by a mate who is one of the re-enactor bosses who tells me that the Me108 was shutting it's engine down in front of the crowd at Tauranga today when the engine burst into flames, caused by the diesel tank carried to feed the smoke generator.
Apparently the re-enactors put the fire out and got the pilot out and he was luckily unharmed by the fire. Did anyone here see this happen? Is the aircraft badly damaged?
Two incidents in two days, not a great weekend for Warbirds.

Not a great weekend in Tauranga! Remind me never to take my future warbirds there! Seriously, hope both aircraft are ok after their incidents.

The fire was put out by a guy named Dean Eynon who was sitting close by in his jeep and saw the whole thing unfold right in front of him. Luckily he had a fire extinguisher on hand in his jeep. I believe he got the fire put out before the pilot even realized he had a problem. Im not too sure about the damage on the plane.

Some pics of the incident. Looking at the pics it looks like the fire extinguisher came from inside the aircraft? Well done by Dean for his quick thinking and action! Colin

A stunning sequence of photos Colin!! Well done, award winning I reckon!
I love the third one where he's using the extinguisher as a jetpack to lift him off the ground! ;D
Once again the Americans save the day.
Not a good weekend for Messerschmitts, with the Ed Russell Me109E flying into a pole on Canada too!

My mate Steve who alerted me to this fire in the first place has looked at this thread and asked me to post the following:
Steve says, "The fire was also put out by a US reenactor named Jared, who was handed the aircraft fire extinguisher by the women co pilot in the plane."
