Hi all
A technical question
When the likes of the P 40's were repainted in camouflage colours here in New Zealand, was any type of masking used?
The reason I ask is that in the UK and to some point the US (for RAF UK bound aircraft) mats were used to get a demarcation (say on a Spitfire).
Did the RNZAF use them too? If so are there any photos or mats still in existence?
Thanks
Alan

Hi Alan, As far as we know the mats were not used in New Zealand for repaints of the P-40's. They were painted "freehand" utilising the Standard RAF schemes.

FWIW. When I restored the AOP9, I spoke to a guy in the UK who painted them new at Rearsby in the 1950's. They just copied the camo pattern (Olive Drab and Dark Earth) outline from the factory drawings freehand in chalk, and painted accordingly. No two the same, but all similar
