Today marks 66 years since the formation of No. 25 (Dive Bomber) Squadron, who flew Douglas Dauntless dive bombers from RNZAF Station Seagrove and Espiritu Santo before going into combat from their base at Piva, Bougainville.

Reading Wally Ingrams book "the Avengers" mention is made a number of times, about the SBD's doing AA/Flak suppression before the TBF's went in.
The SBD's truly did well in their job, we could have lost more TBF's otherwise.
A credit to the men who flew them and the men who kept them flying!!!
What still truly amazes me is that under the conditions that they had to live/work under, that when the RNZAF returned the aircraft to the Marines the comment of the Quarter master that the were in as"New" condition. what a compliment to the people we had (still have) serving in our Air Force (other armed services too!!)
I have a 1/32 SBD-5 in my stash to build as a 25 Squadron aircraft.
