Rex Daniell, has written in response to his grand children asking what “Poppa Rekka” did in the war but dedicated it to the ‘memory’ of those who perished.
Well known for operating his three DC-3 Viewmasters in New Zealand, and recognition by DC-3 ZK-DAK wearing the his D Day Dakota colours for over 20 years little was known of his war time exploits.
WDYDITWPR, as he fondly refers to it, provides a detailed account of flying RAF transport aircraft including Lodestars, DC-2s and C-47s. Initially intended for family, the book is now in demand by friends and aviation followers. He joined the RNZAF in 1939 and transferred to the RAF, which he served predominantly in India, Italy and North Africa. He proudly led his (233) squadron of C-47s, each towing a troop laden glider, in the Allied Invasion of Europe on D Day over France and later in the initial assaults on Arnhem and the Rhine.
His exploits and determination are impressive. Rex is a natural leader, already apparent in “South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand and their DC-3 Viewmasters” (SPANZ) and evidenced here. His exploits were often dramatic with inevitable tragedy but also offered with a measure of good humour.
WDYDITWPR first appeared in 2005 with only 100 copies being printed. Demand for this easy to read book has led to a further 100 copies being printed.
