Every November Cambridge welcomes the re-enactors from across NZ who come to our annual Armistace Day commemorations. We see guys dressed as NZ Army troops, both WWII and WWI, plus US Army guys, German paratroopers, British Paratroopers, and even he odd Frenchie has been seen. Plus a specialist unit who re-enact the Maori Wars period militia.
They add such colour to the event and bring history to life with their displays, drill and battle tableaus. Kids love them, and adults really get into the spirit too.
However, apart from a local chap I know who has a WWII RNZAF uniform he wears when driving his jeep in the parade (his jeep is in No. 6 Squadron RNZAF colours and Ross is a memebr of the Catalina Club!) I've not seen any RNZAF re-enactors of any note.
Have you ever seen any at airshows, re-enacting the wartime RNZAF? Such a practice seems to be big now in the UK with men in period RAF uniform and flying clothing, with the occassional WAAF in support. but I've not seen anything here.
Are you aware of any RNZAF re-enactors? There are certainly uniform collectors - lots come up on tradme - but do people wear them and use them to portray history at public events?
Would you like to see more of this at airshows? I would, so long as they have a good sense of the history they represent and are willing to pass on info to those keen to learn. In most cases that would be a give in anyway.
The only re-enactor I've seen who looks totally into the hobby is on the cover of New Zealand Military Style Issue 2, dressed as a Warrant Officer pilot, with leather helmet and gauntlets and all, posed in front of ZK-WAR. I wonder who he was.
The NZ Historical Re-enactment Society has a nice website here www.hrs.org.nz/ and i have emailed to see if they know of RNZAF re-enactors
