Hi to all. Further to Dave's latest photos from MOTAT, here's a couple I took during a visit in January 2008 of the Hudson showing how 'tatty' she was looking. Note that the vandals had 'munted' the forward radar aerial array. I have quite few more of other exhibits if anyone is interested. Cheers, Pete M.

Avenger looks as though it is going well. I find it amazing that they hand paint their aircraft. Have just been to Duxford...Aeroplanes generally squeeeezed into their hangars as well.

Thanks for the photos Dave. I was out there a few days before you but didn't manage to get many good photos. I also got a tour through the restoration hangar but also the Sunderland. Did you get on board that ? I got shown through buy a guy Mac ?? He flew the Sunderland in the war and was fascinating to talk to, especially with regard to flying the aircraft. Although the aircraft looks pretty poor on the outside they have certainly made great progress on the inside, it's looking great. I get a few photos inside but unfortunately I was having trouble concentrating on taking photos with everything else around to look at so they were a bit blury !

I have not been in the Sunderland yet. It's another goal to work towards I guess, as over the years I've been into the Lancaster, the DC-3, the Solent and the Hudson.

Thanks for posting this update! They are doing a wonderful job on the Mosquito Restoration considering how it looked when it was acquired!! Shame about the wrong color of paint on the Hudson's tail but it sounds like it will be rectified quickly.

Good work Dave, have you got any more shots of the Mosquito? Would be keen to know when the Solent goes outside as that would make a nice photo but hopefully it doesnt spend too much time out in the open. Which Mosquito? MOTAT's or AvSpecs? I'd imagine that the Solent will be outdoors for at least a couple of months. Hopefully it will be in summer but it needs to be rained on heavily too to wash the thick layer of dust off the top which has accumulated (and also the many paper darts which must have been part of a children's programme or something, they're on the Lanc's wings too ;D ). That's not a criticism, I reckon it would be pretty dangerous trying to clean the topside, and also everything beneath would get covered in the muck when it came down. Hopefully the new extension will have double doors to cut the dust down blowing in from outdoors. Would like to see more of the MOTAT example

I just looked at my photos and discovered I only have two others of the Mossie that I haven't already put up. I must have been too transfixed on the Hudson... Here they are:

My apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I notice in the last few days that the Sir Keith Park replica Hurricane is no longer on it's perch - presumably about to undergo a tidy-up? (I drive down Meola Rd at least twice daily)

The chap we spoke to did say it will receive RNZAF style roundels soon. I cannot see any reason why it needs to keep its original identity for display - the Lancaster hasn't, nor have some of their other aircraft. Something more representative of the type would be better than having an RAAF machine that never flew in RNZAF service I think.

Yep, agreed Dave. A fairly common practice amongst the Warbirds community I gather.

Dave in the last photo of the Mossie theres a big chunk of wing centre section with nacelle by the wall. Is that a bit of Hastings?

Yes, it is Hastings. I think they have both wheel wells, as well as a substantial cockpit section and the engines and props. Good basis for a full restoration if there was the interest, but probably never will be.

Good basis for a full restoration if there was the interest, but probably never will be. Motat has just one main wheel with its engine mount and wing section. The idea one day was to have an engine and prop mounted on it (maybe with electric turning motor attached somehow), and the main wheel retraction operation in working order for display and demonstration. Its still on the list of things to do I believe. Last time I called through they already has the Hastings tail wheel setup all operational and ready to go on display. The cockpit is on display in the main hall but has never been well cared for with various groups and people getting keen with various ideas for a flight simulator fitout before realising what a huge job it is and loosing interest.
