I was hoping they'd put on something on that weekend. I will be in Wellington for the NZ v Baharain World Cup Qualifier that evening, and a train ride up to the Wairarapa shouldn't be too much of a bother.
People commute to Wellington from Masterton right? Anyone know how easy it is to get there and back on a Saturday?
Should be a great weekend!

According to the timetable I have. A train leaves Wellington for Masterton at 9.55am and arrives at Solway ( closest station to Hood Aerodrome and a reasonable stroll to the airfield.) at 11.19am. Return leaves Solway at 5.06 and arrives Wellington ( right next to the cake tin ) at 6.30. Details here www.tranzmetro.co.nz/TimeTable.aspxPaul

People commute to Wellington from Masterton right? Anyone know how easy it is to get there and back on a Saturday? Should be a great weekend! Catch the 9:55am train from Wellington to Masterton. It departs from Platform 8 at Wellington railway station. Get off at Solway — the train is due in there at 11:24am, although it sometimes runs a few minutes late depending on how many day visitors there are to Wairarapa and how much they muck around getting off at the various stations. Order a taxi to meet you at Solway railway station. Phone 06 378 2555 to order the cab. It is about five minutes drive from Solway to Hood Aerodrome. Although the poster states the airshow goes until 5:00pm, my experience with these mini airshows is that the flying display generally finishes sometime between 4:15pm and 4:30pm. So order a taxi to pick you up from the aerodrome not long after 4:30pm. The return train to Wellington departs Masterton station at 4:50pm and departs Solway at 4:56pm. It is due to arrive back in Wellington at 6:25pm. I know those train times are accurate, because I drive those trains for a living.

Bruce, out of interest what does that journey cost? Next time I'm in Wellington I might consider the trip, if it's not too expensive.

The train fare from Wellington to Masterton is $15 one-way.
However, if you are returning on the same day, you can get a day return ticket for $16. You can also get a group day return ticket for $35 which allows four people to travel to Wairarapa and return later the same day.

Gee, that's very reasonable. I'll definately have to do the Masterton trip next time I'm in Wellington. Thanks.
Maybe I can stand on the footplate and help you shovel the coal too? ;D

I will definitely be there.
I would have been rostered to work late shift on that date, which would have meant starting work at 3:45pm and driving the 4:50pm train from Masterton to Wellington, so I put in for leave and have got it.
I missed out on the Anzac Day airshow as I was out of town, so I was determined to not miss out on this one. I attended the Remembrance Day airshow at Hood last year.

I'm seriously considering heading down from Auckland for this. I've never been to Hood, and could do with a couple of days off. I'd prefer not to do all the driving myself, so if anyone is keen on an outing, drop me a PM.

If you want to see some scarily high airfares, try searching for Auckland/Masterton/Auckland at Air New Zealand. Would you believe $510 return?

Air NZ Link flights between Masterton and Wellington are mostly geared up to suit Wairarapa people rather than Auckland folks. And that applies especially to weekend services, which basically consists of a Friday evening service from Masterton to Auckland and a Sunday evening service from Auckland to Masterton, catering to Wairarapa people who want to spend a weekend in Auckland.
The best way to get to the TVAL airshow from Auckland (if you don't want to drive) would be to catch a Friday evening flight from Auckland to Wellington and spend the night in a hotel (there's several within walking distance of Wgtn Railway Station, catering for all budgets), then catch the 9:55am train from Wellington to Solway on Saturday morning and book a taxi to take you to the aerodrome. At the end of the day, catch a taxi back to Solway and get on the train departing at 4:56pm, arriving in Wellington at 6:25pm, then fly back to Auckland on an evening flight on the Saturday evening.
