WiseOwl is being held in Whakatane this year and they have an open day/airshow this saturday the 26th from 1030 - 1430
Anyone going? I think ill pop down for a look, fingers crossed the weather is better than last weekend!
I remember heading over to see my brother (barnsey on these boards) at Wiseowl the last time it was at Whakatane...probably around 1996?
The Royal New Zealand Air Force is set to swoop on Whakatane next week as part of Flying Training Wing's Exercise Wiseowl. Whakatane Airport will be transformed into a tent city when over 100 personnel set up for the biannual exercise which runs from 21 September - 1 October. Exercise Wiseowl aims to give the Air Force's student pilots the opportunity to hone their skills at flying in an unfamiliar airspace; while ground crews and trades have the chance to operate in a deployed camp environment. During the exercise, the bright yellow Airtrainers, flown by the student pilots and their instructors, will be seen in the skies above Whakatane and members of the public have the chance for a closer look during the Open Day on Saturday 26 September from 10.30am - 2.00pm. Detachment Commander for the exercise, Squadron Leader Paul Stockley is looking forward to some of the famous Bay of Plenty sun and getting in plenty of flying. "Everyone is looking forward to being based out of Whakatane Airport for a few days. Although it is a challenging exercise for the young pilots, there are many great benefits to getting away from Base Ohakea for a few days and setting up camp in a different environment."
