Desmond Victor "Spell" Spellerberg, nn 25 December 2023 at Winara Care Home, Waikanae, aged 101. Des died as he had lived – quietly, peacefully and with no fuss. A kind, considerate and gentle man, who always put other people first, is now at rest after a very long and happy life. After serving in both the New Zealand Army and RNZAF in World War II, Des returned home from Guadalcanal in 1945 to marry his beloved Kathleen. Their wonderful marriage lasted 76 years until Kathleen's death in April 2022. Des was a perfect father to Kaye, Lynne, Leigh and Anne, a loving grandfather of Richard, Lisa, Katrina, Lane, Anna, Sarah, Jesse, Sam, Nick and Ben, an inspirational great-grandfather, a much-loved brother-in-law of Barbara, a very respected father-in-law, and a good friend to many, especially his fishing mates from his 40 years at the AMP. Grateful thanks and huge admiration to Winara staff, who cared for Des with real affection and respect. In lieu of flowers, donations to Wellington Free Ambulance (wfa.org.nz) would be appreciated. Service details to follow.

The sad news has just come to me from Phil Vabre, via WONZ member Kevin Smith, that well known Australian aviation historian Geoff Goodall has passed away.
"I am sorry to have to report that I’ve just received a message from Jane Goodall to let me know that Geoff passed away at 2am this morning.
She asked for us to spread the word around his aviation family.
I am personally devastated by this news and I know that you will be too. Our thoughts are with Jane and the family at this time.

The sad news has just come to me from Phil Vabre, via WONZ member Kevin Smith, that well known Australian aviation historian Geoff Goodall has passed away. Such awful news, Geoff’s efforts to preserve Australian aviation (and warbird) history were remarkable. Forumite JDK has written a lovely obituary for him (link).

His funeral is at 1pm Saturday 20th January at the Oxford cemetery grave side with light refreshments after the service, at the Oxford Working Men’s club. From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : LYALL, Warrant Officer Desmond John, BEM. J78921; Born Roxburgh, 22 Apr 1940; RNZAF 14 Aug 1957 to 13 Jan 1982; Safety and Surface Worker. Citation British Empire Medal (NY1981): Flight Sergeant Lyall joined the RNZAF in August 1957 and entered the Safety and Surface trade. He has served on most RNZAF bases and is currently the NCO-in-Charge of the Finishing and Liferaft Bay at RNZAF Base Auckland. He is an outstanding NCO who has clearly demonstrated a level of motivation and dedication which goes far beyond that normally expected. Through his dedication and drive, F/S Lyall and his small team of men devised a new camouflage paint scheme for Andover aircraft, involving the use of new materials, and produced a new series of publications on aircraft finishing and markings. Frequently in his own time, he carried out extensive research which involved close liaison with civilian industry and headquarters units at all levels to develop highly complex procedures and techniques which met all technical and operational requirements. The new publications will be the definitive documents in his trade for many years to come. In his painstaking, conscientious and dedicated approach to his work, F/S Lyall has directly contributed to the efficiency and professionalism of the Service. Errol
