Awesome news Don, apart from missing the ANZAC Day launch. Unless you do a pre-launch publicity thing for Anzac Day as a build up towards the actual launch? Regardless I have placed my order with the publisher some time ago and look forward to the book coming out soon.

"Now looking like mid May... "
Perfect, I can pretend it was a birthday present to myself ... ... another copy sold Don, looking forward to reading it!
I used to live on the farm near Whakatane, and those guys would often scream over on their way out to the Volkner Rocks.

It now doesn't look like the books are going to be here in time for an ANZAC Day launch (they are getting printed in China). Now looking like mid May... So, the Chinese can build a stealth aircraft faster than anyone else, but they can't deliver a book on time! ;D

Hi Don, was the same mounting used for the aerial shots that were filmed for the Kiwi Red video/DVD when they showed the rearward shots while doing the aerobatics for the video/DVD? I will be waiting patiently for the book launch and cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. I see quite a few ex Skyhawk pilots in my job and will let them know about the book as I am sure they will also want to buy a copy of their own as it looks great. Cheers Bazza

Glad ANZAC Day is soon. I love that cover. Dave of Flying Doctor has a big similar poster that I loved when we visited his hangar. It doesnt show a discount for early orders on the site but since I will be ordering it from here in the UK how about a signed copy? If its gotta be a new book it will at least have character! Talking of character I am still looking for Errols book 2! A nice NZer who I have just got Air to Air from is looking for me but he recommended I put something on here.. I emailed him back and told him you guys have already been bounced for that! I know its rocking horse stuff to get one but pretty please think of me however tatty the copy so I can complete my set! Cheers Bazza Yes they used the same pod for the Kiwi Red video camera. Say hi to the ex Skyhawk pilots from me - I'm sure they will remember me.

The sooner your book comes out the better. Some tosser has written into the 'letters to the editor' in The Press this morning.
Under the headline 'Skyhawks Useless' his claims include "... they were never a credible face to our defence credibility: they never had the range to carry a weapon load anywhere useful; they could not back up our troops overseas... etc etc ."
The record finally being put straight and the general ignorant public learning something about our Skyhawks, their operational service, history and capabilities is well overdue.
I'm tempted to buy a copy and send it to the PM. (Talk about a rush of blood to the head there!! ;-) )

If the Argentine Air Force and Navy's much older and less well equipped Skyhawks could cause so much damage and chaos to the RN in the Falklands; then yeah, the RNZAF Skyhawks must have been a pretty useless aircraft then.

If the Argentine Air Force and Navy's much older and less well equipped Skyhawks could cause so much damage and chaos to the RN in the Falklands; then yeah, the RNZAF Skyhawks must have been a pretty useless aircraft then. I recall a discussion with a guy at work last year who thought that the FAA and Armada's high Skyhawk losses in that conflict reinforced the idea that ours weren't any good. I pointed out that despite that they still inflicted significant losses on the RN, and that in my opinion, had they had A-4's of close to our capablilties, and flown them slighty smarter, they may well have forced the RN to withdraw.

The losses were very close to unsustainable as they were, a few properly armed bombs would have been enough. If the pilots had been trained to the level of RNZAF aircrew, it would have been enough (and I am in no way denigrating the AAF pilots commitment or bravery, just the lack of SA gained from intense training). If the AAF had Kahu Skyhawks it would have been more than enough. It is amazing to think the RN lost six ships (IIRC) and there were another dozen hits by UXBs... that would have been end of ops if they had gone of. On a clear day flying over the sound you can still see the ghostly outline of HMS Ardent. Or the two scorched craters in a small rock of an island where a pair of A4s, at very low level in bad weather and close-ish formation piled in whilst exiting the combat area. RIP all.

According to Wikipedia, HMS Ardent, HMS Antelope, MV Atlantic Conveyor, RFA Sir Galahad and RFA Sir Tristram were sunk as a result of attacks by waves of AAF A4s. HMS Argonaut and HMS Brilliant were 'badly damaged'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falklands_WarI've only included the losses to A4 attacks, several of which were due to the bombs penetrating the ships hulls but not exploding etc.

Of that list at least, the Atlantic conveyor was not sunk by A4s! It was sunk by Super Etendards.
