I'd put money on the C-27 not being an option. 3 of them cost as much as 2 C-130Js. They don't have the range or payload and introducing another type for such a niche capability isn't likely to have much support. Basically a very very expensive Andover with similar limitations.

There's no dock on Ocean, which makes her unsuitable for the role. Marks is an idiot, I can't believe he got the Minister of Defence job, being an Army Captain does not in the least bit qualify him for the job.

Does it not carry a platoon on the side to support the rear ramp when loading/unloading at sea. I'm not seriously suggesting it's suitable but I'm sure the pollies will want us to have a look.

The jury is still out on this (or do you have some inside information now that he’s been Defence Minister for less than a month?). I'm thankful that at least we have a defence minister who has SOME defence experience and, I hope, sees the value in a strong, well-equipped defence force. We could have done a lot worse than Ron Mark.

'Sir do we have to use the ramp we will jump straight over the side from the top deck if you so order sir.' Kiwi soldiers probable response. 'Sod off you go first. We will just stay here and play touch rugby (the other advantage of a ship with a deck the size of HMS Ocean).

I think you will find Ocean has stern and side doors and she carries some small landing craft launched by davits. Effectively just a larger version of HMNZS Canterbury with a "through deck". She was designed as a LPD version of the Invincible carrying assault helos only. Shame Albion and Bulwark are not available but with the current UK PM May who knows, they "may" become available too!

Albion and Bulwark have very large crews by our standards, 325 people, we couldn't crew one, we don't have the manpower for the job.

The RNZN is lucky to be able to afford for a couple of crew in a dinghy to go out these days and don't use half of the bloody ships we already have anywhere near enough so why would we even bother with second hand British stuff. That would be like going back to the old days......

The QAMR minus Scots SQN and incl WMR as their LOV's keep breaking down has to borrow the Scots SQN wagons in order to conduct drag races on the flight deck while testing the brakes on the LAV's as the Scots SQN Mafia will be running the bar and the tote as per usual. As the Green Party will want the NZDF to conduct a fundraising exercise to buy the former HMS Ocean.

I doubt if Marks is interested in Ocean anyway' She carries a crew of 285 not much different FROM Albion despite being a much larger ship compared with Canterbury's 53. (Incidentally Ocean is a LPH not an LPD) For the record Canterbury is classed as a AKRH/AX. The Aussies bought a 2nd hand Bay Class LSD off the UK and of course the 2 Newport Class from the US which turned out to be rust buckets. The need here is for a vessel able to land using both NH90 and a medium sized landing craft which cannot be launched by davits or cranes, or at least those carried by Canterbury. Canterbury was a huge advance on the Charles Upham but was still only a compromise on a real landing ship. The other issue with Ocean apart from crew size and the fact she is also limited to "small" landing craft is that she would be too large for Devenport to dock as she is 670 feet in length and has a 112 foot beam?

What has a pommie navy ship actually got to do with the RNZAF transport replacement programme? Keep on topic please and if you want to talk about the navy, take it to the navy board.

Aren't they trashed because the A400Ms are late?
