Yes I have but he said he has no idea. He has asked alot of plane lovers and they are all stumped on what it is.

Can you see, or ask your friend the artist, if it has cowl flaps or gaps for a cowl flap underneath? It appears to have an oil filler flap on the very top of the cowling. From memory, most Lycoming and Continental piston engines have the oil filler flaps on the left side of the cowling.

I don't think so Naki, the carburettor intake is flush on the artist's one, the Stinson pictures I looked at have a protruding scoop just behind the front of the cowl.

But it does share the same intake shape. Those bits ahead of the intakes are very odd. Luther, you should've used this in the mystery aircraft quiz  |

I looked at the engine type for the Stinson L5 and it is a Lycoming O-435. Looking up that engine, I found a cowl that is the same shape and is fitted to a 'Bellanca 14-13 Cruisair Senior'. The carb intake is flush, and it has the same lines atop with the same holes either side at the front.

I was thinking of posting it there but I didnt think it was a mystery aircraft more of an unknown cowl question haha.

Don't think it is a landing gear door as the shiny half has camlock fasteners and the painted side has no attachment for a actuator and also camlock fasteners on the curved edge. If both lots were fastened there is no way they could act as doors.
Also note that the repair for the"bullet"(?) hole is pretty rough, nice enough scab patch but the hole hasn't been cleaned up at all.
