Very lucky - he wasn't wearing a helmet either. It appears the seat ripped free and he ended up face down on the rear bulkhead?

I know the investigation will start and we are not supposed to guess what happened but... in the slow-mo video, a wire hanging on the r-h-s of the tower is seen (to my eyes) being blown away from the tower as he got really low... and then it's all bad.
A lucky "escape".

ZK-HIG. Lucky indeed. Watching him getting flung around is horrible. Looks very violent.

A bit puzzled that he doesn't seem strapped to the pilots seat though. It looks more like he left the seat than the seat breaking loose to me. Lots of luck all round there, so nice outcome considering the potentials.

It is good video. Indeed you can see something black come off whether it's a hat or helmet who knows.

I have to laugh on the lunchtime news One News is billing the story as EXCLUSIVE over their footage that they took. On the other channel 3 News is playing the same footage, but not as good quality as they have obviouly ripped it off One News's website. ;D
A good clip for TV3's "Destroyed in Seconds" show.

A good clip for TV3's "Destroyed in Seconds" show. Yeah-that half hour programme that by the time you take out the ads, and constant replays of the same event over and over with some gormless guy talking over it and some lame sound effects....actually ends up about 10 minutes long! GRR crappy commercial TV (the US version is probably better but cant afford Sky )

Very fortunate outcome indeed! I would hazard a guess that it's the same helicopter that I watched doing a lot of lifting work in the vicinity of the Birkenhead RSA not so long ago?

Looks like the same chopper Stu. Can anyone confirm where that chopper 'lives' or rather, 'lived'? I'm sure I've seen it at Ardmore having work done a few times...

There's a second video on the stuff page, "Helicopter Crash Witnesses" - and although the interview with the fire chief is good, the other guy is a numpty.
The interesting bit is the close up shot at about 26-27 seconds in.

He may have only being wearing a lap belt to enable him to lean out of the cockpit, which would be difficult to do with a shoulder belts as well. Just goes to show the forces that are involved when the whirly bits of a helo are upset! But at least he was wearing a fluro jacket - like thats really going to help safety!

Very lucky - he wasn't wearing a helmet either. It appears the seat ripped free and he ended up face down on the rear bulkhead? I'm sure the seat detatched from it's mounts. And thats the problem with those type of Squirrel seats, they are barely attached to aircraft. There is little real structure under the mountings The ADF changed our seats for EC120 seats after an accident 10 years ago. If he was sitting in a EC120 seat he'd still be there. It's a pity that Eurocopter still offer those old seats as standard fit as they are not up to modern standards He was really lucky to not get injured. Not a lot of thought seems to have gone intothe risks of what they were trying to do and where they were trying to do it.

He was really lucky to not get injured. Not a lot of thought seems to have gone intothe risks of what they were trying to do and where they were trying to do it. Who are you to say that? These guys do extensive lifting work all over the place. I doubt they would be operating on such a high profile job in such a high profile area without plenty of prior planning. At this point there are any number of possible causes, let's have a bit of professional courtesy towards a fellow aviator and wait until FACTS are known before we start playing the blame game. Sometimes shit just happens, at the end of the day no one was hurt or worse so good outcome to a bad situation.
