U.S. Dave..You would be most welcome down here and Americans are treated really well like our Aussie mates...In WW2 over 100,000 US marines, navy and army personel were stationed here protecting our shores while our divisions were fighting in the middle east and the Pacific. Dave Hs views are thoughtful and to be fair reflect many peoples thinking around the world including Canada. We just disagree on this issue...I would like to see us back in our defence pack with Aus and US (ANZUS) however I suspect that is very unlikely. cheers

Steve, I too would like to see a better situation in the defence relations - don't get me wrong. I just do not think it's worth the risk with this current administration.
That's what is great about this forum, we can have thoughtful debate with opposing views yet it never gets too heated or out of hand. There's no need as we're all mates. I don't think there's ever been a falling out here actaully, has there?
Merry Christmas Steve, Dave, Colin and everyone else.

Quite right Dave...I think we all enjoy a political debate now again , opposing views have never got out of hand from what i have seen. I am sure US Dave understands that you are not anti american just administration and foreign policy...
Now....US Dave..."Phil82" has offered you mates accomodation in Wellington and we would be delighted to offer you the same in Auckland near the airport if you decide to come down under...best wishes to all

Absolutely.....That's one of the things that drew me to this board after lurking for awhile. We have all seen the internet forums where everyone behaves like kids and can't agree to disagree when they have difference's of opinion. Yellow Journalisim and kooks aside, most of us are proud of our fighting troops and our allies. As I recall N.Z. has also contributed to the fight against the extremist elements in Afgahanistan. I think there is more common ground than differences. I respect my government, but will excercise my voting rights come election time. That does not mean that I think all decisions were wrong. But I sure wish they could have stood tall and admitted where they were wrong, and taken corrective action sooner; rather than later! My wife and step children are Australian. My in-laws ran a Horse Stud in the Waikato (please excuse the spelling) for several years, and my father in law's father was a New Zealand Born Aussie Citizen who served in the RAF Coastal Command on 86 Squadron flying liberators. My paternal grandfather was in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Seems like one big "melting pot to me". Even though by marriage, I feel very "attached" to not only Australia, but New Zealand as well. I bet there are a fair number like me out there! Happy Holiday's all!!

Calum, In that same era (late 1960s) of a potential nuclear power plant at Jervis Bay there was going to be a huge steel mill on the northern shore. At the time there was a land price boom that went bust a few years later when none of the plans eventuated. Today most of the Jervis Bay area is National or Marine Park isn't it? That would rule out any nuclear power plant on that old site on the southern shore of JB? Phil. Hi Phil, yeah a steel mill and a Chemical factory were slated to be built near what is now Callala beach. Thankfully it never happened(although I'd have never know the difference). I believe an economic downturn killed these events My father in law has plans, including street layouts for a whole city built around JB, in size it would have rivalled Sydney. I'd like to think the National/marine Parks would rule it out but who knows. Guess we'll find out in time For anyone interested here's a pic of Jervis Bay and a wider image of the Shoalhaven area Man hasn't this thread got way off track ;D

Cheers Dave. It doesn't ring a bell but then i was a kid in the 1980's. Still, it's a very small world isn't it? There are several people on this forum who live in or have family connections to Cambridge.

Wasn't Jervis Bay also being considered as the site for the RAN's weapons storage facility at one stage in the last 5 or so years? I think it was slated to be a torpedo handling facility?
I believe that this facility has been established elsewhere now.
Jervis Bay is a beautiful spot, and I'd recommend it to any overseas visitors to Australia.

Yes then this facility for the Eastern fleet was going to be sited at Merimbula or Twofold Bay or somewhere south. Not sure of outcome of all that.
