I always thought the upgrades were done at De Havillands at Rongotai.

Great to see those photos and fill in some further history regarding Devon NZ1804. We owned it for a while, now with Phil Hindon and stored in a box at AS.

The two Devons that were gifted to Malyasia were NZ1823 and NZ1825. They had been stored reserve airframes. Therefore, before departure overseas, they had to be bought up to currency - by HSNZ.
NZ1823 became FM1056 and NZ1825 became FM1057 with the RMAF.
I have tried to track the later history of these two aircraft, including enquiries in Malaysia. They apparently served with the RMAF for some years, but there seems to be no recorded evidence of any later history. This seems a little strange, as they would still have been relatively low-houred airframes by the time they left military service given their long storage in NZ.
My eventual conclusion is that possibly there was some clause in the gifting contract that prevented any onsale after their RMAF service had finished and therefore they were simply scrapped.
Can anyone confirm this?

I can't recall the dates but I do remember both RMAF Devons being worked on being parked along the south wall of the AMS hangar, and thinking that all our Devons should have the same upgrades!! They where in their RMAF coulours, quite colourful. I don't recall what eventually happened to them.

Sounds like INST214 ex NZ1804. Devon navigation trainer NZ1804, WFU 1980 to INST214 4TTS, to Nelson ATC November 1981 sold, to G F Rhodes for display at Wanaka now at Ashburton.

Split personality Skyhawkfan1?
I always wondered why the 4TTS Devons didn't have INST numbers on them. They were always showing their RNZAF serial numbers.

After blowing the dust off my logbook, I saw an entry for 19 May 1980. A photographic flight at Wigram to mark the "Devon's Farewell" from NATTS. As I remember, it involved a tidy formation of Devons with its role successor, The F27 Friendship. I'm sure thay there will be a few photos of that flight in archives/scrap books/log books around the country.
