I'll stop being silly- it is a different aircraft. Palmerston North is where the Convair heavy maintenance is done. As you can see, the hangar is big enough.

More news on this front. Metroliner services from the South Island to Palmerston North are to cease in October. I guess everything will now be transported on Air Freight flights out of Christchurch.

I have it on good authority that Air Chatham's have purchased one of the Airfreight NZ Convairs for use as a freight aircraft (at least for the short term).

You do indeed harrysone. Duane Emeny, their Airline & Charter General Manager, told me at Tauranga on Sunday of the Convair purchase bringing their fleet to 12 aircraft. This weekend just gone was the first of their DC-3 visits for scenic flights this summer. scroll down through www.classicflyersnz.com/Flights.html

I Talked to Craig on the flight back from the Chathams on Wednesday It will see useage flying crayfish out for a time but may eventually get reduced to spares (as CID was)

I would also have thought ATRs would be a great replacement, especially since Air NZ have a sizeable (fleet and still more to come) which means the maintenance expertise is already in the country.

7 times the price, 90 percent of the load at the same speed in a lighter construction aircraft. Only immediate advantages are navigation capability and better fuel burn.

One also tends to forget that the Convairs are essentially fully depreciated assets. Therefore they can afford to have the aircraft sitting around more, doing ad-hoc work or charters rather than having to keep flying and turning an income 24/7

I suppose it would be the first one for the chop, as it had the odd door of the Air Freight fleet.

MOTAT last year turned down the offer of a gift of an amazing restoration by TVAL.
Unfortunately due to a confidentiality agreement I signed, I cannot tell you what it is.

We'll take a Convair - if it is free and comes with a building to put it in. MOTAT might well accept the same terms. Always fun to see the same ground trotted over time and time again.

If however someone wanted a nose/cockpit section, NOW would be the time to talk to Air Chathams.

Wouldn't the Chatham Islands aviation museum be the most appropriate place for it to go to?

Air Freight NZ operated out of Palmerston North, Christchurch and Auckland, Air Chathams from the Chathams and Pioneer from Wigram, so there are plenty of locations to choose. Plus there will be more than one aircraft broken up anyway, so it's not really an either/or question, more that if anyone is interested they should make the call rather than wait and miss out.
if you don't ask, you don't get, and all that.
