MOTAT does not want any more aeroplanes. Isn't that a little short sighted? I mean the Sunderland sat outside for ever. At least this could do the same until something comes up. Just sayin not stirring

Would be nice to have some bits of them scattered around the country in museums. I'm not a huge fan of the type. But they have certainly played a long and important role in the country. And not many medium sized planes get scrapped in NZ anymore. Look at the trouble involved in trying to bring back huge wrecks our National carrier once used. I totally agree with museums not wanting a new arrival of this size but as mentioned a cockpit section is ideal and way better than nothing. I'm personally not allowed any more plane wrecks at my house but someone else must have room

Fair enough!! wouldn't bloody want to, but I hope we never see a thread on here in some years from now saying " why didn't we save a Convair when we had the chance". Look at the F27. At least that was stored some where to end up in a Museum..

Yes, but if we had stored it (the F-27) much longer it would have been beyond reasonable repair, and as it is there is a major mountain to climb. Bear in mind too, that the community of people who are willing to help restore, fund and and house these large aircraft is tiny (for example we have ~10 regular volunteers), and this is a time when someone is trying to rescue 4 very large airframes, with no established group to care for them. The cockpit section though - there's a thought....

I see in the paper Freightways has chartered back one of its Convairs to run freight between Auckland and the South Island and looking at possibly another 737 later in the year

Yes I believe the Air Chats is doing quite a bit of work for both Freightways and NZ Post. Post is putting quite a bit on Air NZ as well so there is obviously the need for additional capacity so I would expect that we will see an additional 737 before the end of the year.
I also heard that one of the 737's struck birds at Palmerston North last night but was expected to be back in service this evening after engineering checks had been completed.
