Here is my rendition of Evan Mackie's Blue Malta Spitfire Mk Vc depicted in June 1943 - DSCN2157 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2126 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2128 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2138 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2136 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2134 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2132 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2133 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2151 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr DSCN2129 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr I've assumed Malta was a fairly harsh environment for aircraft and weathered it somewhat more than photographs depict. Special Hobby 1/48 Spitfire Vc 'Malta Defenders', Eduard self-adhesive cockpit detail set, Master Brass Canons & some Eduard spares (canopy) & stencils, Victory Productions "Spitfire - Empire Aces" decals, Aeromaster acrylic and Tamiya enamel paints. Enjoy. All feedback appreciated. Regards Wally.

Nice! I've not seen a MK.V with the multiple ejector exhaust system before, only with the triple ejector system. Looks nice Your brush work is a joy to behold Wally.

Wing Commander Dereck "Bill" Kane also had a personal Mk. V Spitfire with the six exhaust stubs each side of the engine, as it had been hotted up for him. He was CO of RAF Station Adku in Egypt at the time, from memory.

Bill's Spitfire didn't have the Volkes dust filter though despite being on a desert base.

Later in the war and as there were more of the later Mark Spitfires on stream it was sometimes quicker to replace the old style exhausts with the stub style which would have been in large numbers in the spares system for the various Mark IX,XI,XVI etc Spits. Yes great job Wally!

Yes, I think Bill's had an Aboukir filter. I seem to recall it was modified at Aboukir, and it was lightened because he was keen to chase the high altitude Ju86's. He did so on one occasion but just could not catch it.

That makes better sense having the Aboukir on it. Much smaller more efficient design. The Vokes was an airbrake on the front really!

Cheers people, thanks for your comments. I want to build that Dereck Kane Spitfire some day, and I would love to build an Egyptian Hurricane from the Squadron he apparently delivered (or commanded the delivery of) to Egypt in 1944. From memory the Hurricanes are pictured in the same Classic Warbirds in which the above photo is also reproduced. I believe this Spitfire wears the same Dark Brown/Dark Green over Sky camouflage as Alan Peart's Spitfire Mk VIII which Calum is building on here at present? It certainly looks dark in B&W photos. Regards Wally.

Hi Wally, I seem to recall that Bill's Spitfire wore the standard desert camouflage of dark brown and sand camo, with azure blue undersides, and red spinner; he confirmed that to Kerry Carlyle when Kerry built him the model. That is as I remember it anyway, it was a long time ago. Bill was the first veteran I was ever involved in interviewing, approx 1996. It was from that interview that the material for Malcolm Laird's book was drawn because Kerry sent the material to Malcolm.
Kerry will recall more clearly all this about the colour scheme but I am having major trouble getting hold of him, he seems to have dropped off the grid!
And yes Bill was in charge of the hand over of the Hurricanes to Egypt.

Just when you think you've learned everything about Spitfires something new pops up. I had never seen that Aboukir filter mod. Probably not noticed the difference between the standard MK V filter and the modded one. I wonder if this lead to the bigger filter arrangement on the MK IX(since the early IX still had the MK V arrangement.)
