I actually thought the Aussies might have popped a MRH90 or Chinook into a C17 and came over to help.

Being an engineer (and surveyor) I know how that would have worked and it would be down to the line of best fit between particular routes and money, cost/benefit so to speak. Perhaps now if there was another alternative that 'future proofed' the route that particular benefit would outweigh the costs. Perhaps an alternative may be one in which the road and rail were actually divorced from the coast with a long bridge in all the problematic areas as exists at the Sea Cliff Bridge, Stanwell Park just south from Sydney. Obviously a longer version or multiple versions would be required.

I had read somewhere that USGS' record that it was 7.8 from the start was due to differences in the way magnitudes were recorded by the different organisations. But the fact USGS still says 7.8 makes me think that original thing I read was wrong!
HMNZS Canterbury evacuated about 450 people, 4 dogs and 7t of luggage to Lyttelton overnight.

I wonder how long it takes to strip down a Chinook to fit in a C-17? And re-assemble. The shiny new floating boxes could bring them over, but that will take days, even if they aren't otherwise committed.

Have the authorities released the names of the quake victims yet? I have not seen anything on them.

I've asked that on the Stuff liveblog and will share whatever they say. I think the media inferred who the victim at the collapsed farmstead was, but I'm not sure about the other.

Have the authorities released the names of the quake victims yet? I have not seen anything on them. This is from a Stuff story about the Queen's condolence message, posted yesterday morning: Mt Lyford woman Jo-Anne Mackinnon died of a suspected heart attack when the quake hit just after midnight on Monday morning, while Kaikoura man Louis Edgar was killed when his family's homestead collapsed.

An interesting series of videos taken during a survey helicopter flight on Tuesday, 15 November 2016 by Environment Canterbury. There are also a huge number of photographs taken during the flight, which can be downloaded from THIS map, which also shows the flightpath taken by the helicopter.... I have been meaning to ask, have we actually got any members on the forum who live in Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs, Culverden, Waiau, Cheviot, Oaro, Lyford, Seddon, or any of the places in the massive zone affected by the quakes and the aftermath?

Hey, looking at earthquake images almost counts as work for me! Good links at The Landslide Blog, including ECAN maps with helicopter flightpaths & linked imagery. Even a bit of helicopter spotting in Kaikoura.

With the coastal uplift and sea floor changes I know that it is early days but has anyone suggested through Mr Keys to Mr Turnbull that great assistance could be provided not only with the disaster relief but also by tasking the RAN's Bombardier Dash 8 LADS (Laser Airborne Depth Sounder) over to NZ to undertake a survey of the coastline. The machine can operate on the ocean land interface and provide a mammoth amount of data quickly that would be very useful to NZ Maritime and assist with the promulgation of new (very accurate) charts. It was displayed at RAAF Townsville airshow recently and is based in Cairns. This would be a very practical adjunct to the relief that is also being provided in the quakes immediate aftermath and would have long lasting effects. Can cover about 5000km2 in a 10hr sortie if my memory from the airshow serves me correctly. I also think (from memory) that it is accurate to depths of about 200ft (60+metres) so would be great in checking harbours, channels etc

Blenheim, but we got of very lightly here as far as damage goes. Good to see someone out doing some aerobatics over Omaka this afternoon, stress relief at its best.
