The CAA have been turfed out of their headquarters for a couple of weeks. A problem with cracks in the stairwells, apparently.

Cambridge has its own fault line, as I discovered a little over a year ago when a big quake hit here.I never felt a thing but it woke my best mate up. It apparently runs under Karapiro dam. We don't need it thanks.

I still can't get over how the earthquake near Culverden managed to foul up Raglan's water supply. This country is weird.

Due to the 7.8 magnitude quake some serious damage was found in the Rotorua Museum building (the famous Tudor bath houses). Also the Hamilton Central Library is closing for several months to be strengthened, just in case, so the ripples from this event are far reaching.

Dave, I think the issue with the Hamilton Library was known about previously, and work was planned for the future. What Culverden and Wellington have done is to say "don't muck around - sort it now". I'm a tad peeved as the library had just bought a pile of material in from their offsite store for me to go through, and I won't now be able to get to it until next year. Re the faults in the Waikato, they have been know about for a long time, especially the Kerepehi Fault. The issue is that most of the Waikato fault lines are not considered "active" and not subject to continuous stress from movement of the earth's crust. The Karapiro Fault is the subject of a very detailed emergency response plan, which has modelled the effects of a partial or total dam failure, along with the resulting flood wave and its affects on the river and its surrounds. Studies also exist for each of the other dams on the river and the resulting effects.

The three Wellington counsel buildings effected, were actually damaged in previous quakes, and this was just a wake up call. isc
