No it was gifted to Te Papa...so James family have no control over what happens with it now regretfully....Lynn told me that.
Theres actually a large number of original Ag Tigers still airworthy in NZ,several of the 'originals',theres an old Aussie Ag Tiger here, and not forgetting the last active Ag Tiger is still flying here.

Ag Cat was $15,000 in 1960,Piper Pawnee was $8,995. It would have been interesting if Waitomo Aviation NZ had talked to Transland, they could have had a ready made ag plane to produce in NZ instead of trying to design and build the Airtruk from scratch.

Here we go,I thought there would be more to this story.I used to live under the Waharoa- Tauranga flight path and know, that if your engine failed as you crossed the Kaimais you would simply turn around and glide back over the flat Waikato farm land on the Matamata side. And if if failed when you were too far to turn back the land out towards Tauranga the land decsends as you go to the coast,so even the humble Tiger Moth could have glided out to the farm land on the Tauranga side.Would be interesting to know what the weather was like on that day.

They made 3 of them,so it would appear it wasn't very successful.

The biggest problem with fire bombing here is getting enough water to the planes to bomb the fire. The big ag planes can work off farm strips close to fires but you can't get enough water to them quick enought with tankers to keep up.Similarly if you were to use large aircraft you would need to build Olympic size pools at most airports for them to use.The Canadair float planes need lakes to scoop up water to drop on the fires,we don't have enough lake near the fire like they do in Canada. We also don't have enough big fires here to warrant having large aircraft on stand by all summer.

Yes were quite lucky at Tauranga the glider strip is one of the few places you can stand in the middle of the runway and get the glider and tow plane close together.

The Moth has been hand coloured or retouched as they used to do on photos of that era.Theres a lot of photograhic noise in the photo and none on the Moth, which suggests it been hand retouched. The Moth was probably quite blurred in the original print, retouching covers it up.Most photograhic companies and newspapers employed ladies to hand colour and redo photos back then.Cameras and film were also nothing as sophisticated as they are today back in the 'olden days' either.... link
