Big rumour in recent times id like to know more about was the Dump at Wigram found when it was being re developed the Me109E was supposed to have been chopped up and dumped in there and I recently saw Harvard parts on TM with notes saying found in Wigram airbase dump.... how much was found, by who and how did some make it onto the market ?? I think a nice big chunk of fuse would have been pretty temping for scrappies had they found anything.

Only Venturas in RNZAF with "waist gunners" were the B-34s - I presume this is what you are referring to? These had the guns mounted on a ball and socket arrangement. Or perhaps the belly gunner of a PV-1 (or B-34). Guessing the piece in question is the distinctive one in the centre foreground of image, just above the con-rods and looking like the mounting brackets for the guttering of a house! Correct there David I have a pair at home that I full up with wartime dated .50 cal cases when I come across them. I was thinking Belly position but the nose guns makes much more sense

Many thanks mate, thats all the finer details I was after and then sum. wow a truly horrible but interesting story. I went to a double Blenheim crash in Norway where we paid our respects to the Crew in Bergin CWGC then went to the crash site, which consisted of a giant hole next to a swamp and 4 engines in the side of the hill next to it. thinking that the German did an efficient job of recovering a bury the dead we jump into the swamp to have poke around. My Norwegian mate put his hand under water and pulled out a near complete but smashed flgiht engineers panel with gauges and switches. I put my hands under water and pulled out what felt like a pipe from the engine..... turns out it was complete leg bone. those German weren't as efficient as we had hoped. the Bone was handed over to local Police not 100% what became of it as all the bodies were accounted for. May they all rest in peace.

I just remember my father telling me that 3 aircraft were flown in. A Zero a Dinah and a Jake. He had photos of the first two which I may still have somewhere. The Zero was shipped back to NZ. The other two were left behind. He never said any thing about 3 Zeros. The Jake is still sitting in the the bay, was scuttled by Kiwis as no one wanted to fly it back south.

Bruce Laing joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in 1934. He was sixteen when he joined as a Boy 2nd Class and completed basic training in HMS Philomel. Laing became a Signalman Boy in 1935 and joined the crew of HMS Dunedin as an Ordinary Signalman in 1936. He was posted to HMS Leander in 1937 and remained with the ship for two years. Laing was part of the crew of HMS Leander present at King George VI’s coronation in 1937. In 1939 Laing was sent to the UK and posted to the shore establishment HMS Victory before serving in HMS Raven, a Fleet Air Arm (FAA) shore establishment, although still as a signaller. He then volunteered for service as aircrew in the FAA in June 1940 and became a Telegraphist Air Gunner.
Laing joined 825 Squadron who were attached to HMS Furious, flying Fairey Swordfish aircraft and operating off the coast of Norway. At some point after September 1940, Laing became interned in Sweden (a neutral country) where his aircraft must have come down. He was returned to Britain by September 1941 when he had a posting in HMS Daedalus. In 1941 Laing served in the FAA shore establishment HMS Kestrel before being sent to HMNZS Leander – given she was not operating an aircraft at the time, he would have served as a signalman onboard. Laing took another overseas posting in 1943 to HMS Tana, a FAA shore establishment in Kenya, followed by almost a year spent in HMS Ukussa in Sri Lanka. After a few UK postings in shore establishments in 1945, Laing returned to New Zealand in July 1945.

Would anyone know anymore of P51 NZ2424 or have the crash report on her?? Did the RNZAF bother with a recovery of the wreckage since it was a dive in from great heights or she still sittin on the hbr floor in a big mush of alloy ??
124-48268 45-11515 Shipped from the US on the "Dominion Park". Received at the Aircraft Assembly Depot Hobsonville on 27 August 1945. Placed in rubberised storage at Hobsonville in early 1946. Transferred to Ardmore by barge and road in February 1947. Remained cocooned until early 1952. To No.3 (Canterbury) TAF Squadron 10 June 1952. Dived into Lyttleton Harbour from high altitude due oxygen failure at 1153 hours on 27 September 1952. Officer Vernon Duckmanton killed. This was the first RNZAF Mustang to be lost.

Fascinating links, it is a shame however as the article says, that so many wreck parts are sold off illegally with no context of where they are from and the stories lost. most of it ends up in Local scrap bins for a couple of dollars booze money.

We had a great day on Friday and the team have now managed to get the wing fold system working as it should. With the painting virtually complete we pushed the aircraft out of the hangar after lunch and had the wing extended and locked within minutes and she made a great sight. The aircraft artwork for this aircraft will portray two different aircraft. On the starboard side will be 'Plonky' and on the port side will be 'We never Miss'. A big 'Thank You' to Marty Cantlon for all of his work on the Avenger with all of the insignia being hand painted on and during the build, all on the stencil work he has performed, that has greatly enhanced the presentation of this restoration. JESUS THIS CANNOT BE THE SAME TBF from Riverhead !?!?!?!?!?!?!

While on the subject of rumours or crash sites has anyone been the site of Dempseys Corsair in the mud off Ihumatao near the Auckland airport. I remember my Grandfather telling me During the war as a teen working on a farm in the Manukua area he walking along the beach and kicked a boot , it still had a pilots boot in it. if anyone has anymore info on this site or any other ww2 crash sites in the Auckland area please get in touch at think there were x2 P40s that collided over Weeks island not too far from the Corsair accident. Another bump? ;-) Charles Darby's Pacific Aircraft Wrecks book had the forward fuselage and wings of NZ5262 as being at/near Jacquinot Bay airfield, and NZ5429 is still on the Pacific Wrecks website although is little more than a centre section hulk: www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/f4u/NZ5429.html I too would like to know, however with the main town of Rabual almost abandoned and the new centre in the Vunapop area the re development probable meant that the remains of the F4U were possibly destroyed, id love to speak with anyone how can confirm the location so my mate who is historian on P&O cruise ship can check up on the condition. Cheers
