I was told a story the other day at work. It came from a man that was a RNZAF serviceman in the '50s.
He was telling me how he had the chance to occupy the spare seat on one of 2 Devon's on a formation training flight out of Christchurch. The story went on that he didn't go as he had a date lined up as soon as he went off duty, she stood him up but the fate was far worse for those on the 2 planes as they collided and all onboard died.... I was trying to find out anymore on this story, dates, aircraft etc but I can't find anything. Have I been spun a yarn??

Are there any pictures of the a/c before it headed off shore. I know there are some on kiwi aircraft images but time has moved on since then... NZ3119 is an interesting aircraft, in that I asked the a/force museum crew about it's service, very limited information was on file. Then I came across an old Charles Darby publication that tells of one kill but I can't find out anymore... Does anyone know anything?

Went to motat today.... A hard working group of volunteers were very busy. I had the extreme delight in watching the moquito, the avaenger and the hudson move into the move and renovated workshop... I have taken photos but need to sort out the posting, otherwise I will post them on the flypast forum...

From todays NZ herald "Spitfire downed 5:00AM Sunday February 24, 2008 By Cliff Taylor The most famous fighter plane of World War II has lost none of its awesome reputation if the reaction of United States authorities is anything to go by.
A Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX, which was to have been the star attraction at this weekend's Mercury Bay Shell Airshow at Whitianga, has been impounded by US Customs - apparently because they still consider it to be a deadly military machine.
The rebuilt two-seater, one of only five in the world, was bought in the US by Aucklander Doug Brooker, who had hoped to see it fly over the Coromandel this weekend and appear at the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow in March.
It would have been the first time such an aircraft had been seen in the Southern Hemisphere. But the fighter has been prevented from leaving the US, caught for the past fortnight in a web of bureaucratic red tape.
"From what I can gather, the rules were changed in the last few months after a couple of understandable issues they had over there," said Brooker.
"It seems that a plane built in 1943 goes into the same category as an F16 or something. With an exported military aircraft it has to be in a certain category.
"My guess is the same thing would happen with a WWI aircraft."
Brooker would not reveal how much he paid for the Spitfire, which comes complete with replica wing-mounted machine guns, except to say the price was "very reasonable".
The plane is painted to represent the Spitfire flown by American Major Robert Levine of the 4th Fighter Squadron in the Middle East during WWII.
Brooker said he had been a Spitfire enthusiast "since reading Biggles books as a boy".
He was still hopeful the plane would make it for the Wanaka airshow, but admitted it was "getting pretty tight".

I agree, Whenuapai was great this year, although I got stung for a car ($20) and I was the only one in it, the other 12 were nicely stacked in the boot..... The airforce put on a great display and the P-51 entry from the north west was amazing, I have never seen it so low and fast, I had to pick my jaw up before I could get the camera and by then it had long gone....
I really don't know about this Hamilton show, for a 1st time, the are keeping things a little too close to their chests and they have no reputation to run on....need to know soooooo much more before making plans.....

This is a worry.... Last time I was there they were packing all sorts of bits and pieces into 2 of the sheds there in preparation for the move of the Belfast hangar.....and there was at least 2 least 2 more buildings being used for storage.... Also of worry is the mosquito, made from wood, needs to be secured away from these sort of brainless idiots.... We need to know more as soon as posible....

i've just looked at the pic's, she looks fantastic, great job by a kiwi team(?), where did this job get done?, Who did the work?? Does anyone have any pics of the work??? Its a tradgedy that one of 'our' pieces of history should end up oversea's.... It's a small consolation that the NZ markings are on it, but how long will that last?? Why couldn't someone have fronted up with the money to keep her here...... (I've been trying to get some funds together (lotto tickets) but not luck there yet)
