I attended the Flinders University in Adelaide which is a campus of Adelaide University and studied Geology/Earth Science under the tutelage of some of this Professor's colleagues and they are some eminent scientists
With regard to Global warming I will address that, but first a comment re greepeace. A noted journalist made the comment in the Time magazine that these people whinge and complain and state we shouldn't do this or that, because it does this but, they never actually offer any real alternatives.
In the 1990's greenpeace hammered the Finnish government about sealing in the Lap lands, showing a terrible video of poor seals being clubbed to death, obviously public outrage was the norm and the Finnish government banned sealing and thousand of Lap Landers were on the dole queue. It came out later on that greenpeace had staged the whole video, they were the ones actually in the video killing the poor seals, needless to say the Finnish government were none to happy and greenpeaces fame took a big dive. They did the same thing in Australia also. The best thing people in the world can do is ban them from entering their territorial waters etc they are nothing but terrorist wolves in sheep's clothing.
Any way back to global warming, one of my lecturers made the statement that we are in an ice age, the reason being is that not only do we have large polar caps, glaciers etc but the Earths oceans are lower. We know that because there are increased levels of an Oxygen Isotope (O18 i think from memory)in the sea. It interesting to note that we are obviously coming to the end of the ice age and the Earth is warming up naturally.
Antarctica was once a forested place not unlike New Zealand is now, as the ice melts we can see what Antarctica really looks like now. As mentioned previous the Earth is dynamic , always changing.
How many of you realize that the Magnetic pole travels in a figure 8 pattern across the Arctic, or how many of you know that the South Pole is actually the North Pole (remember magnetic opposites attract) and both the North and South poles have changed position many times over Earths history
Our oceans help control the weather, temperature and salinity play a big part.
The moon and Sun also play a big part, Sun spots/flares can have a big impact on weather, also a change in the Earths axis can affect weather etc.
One thing I have noticed is that Mother Earth is quite resilient in bouncing back, examples: the rivers Rhine and Thames (Germany and England respectively) some of the most polluted water in the world, changes in mans habit has helped but both are now quite clean
Mankind has to some degree assisted in polluting our world, and we can help clean it, but the global warming is a hype

Hi FlyNavy Thanks again for the photo Yes I guess it is a small world, Naval history has played a part in my wife's family history, her ancestors were first fleeters so I guess it's fitting that the navy tradition continued some where down the familiy line aways. (another note, my own nephew is currently serving with the RAN not sure where or on what ship though) ;D Regards Alan

Hi FlyNavy
Thanks for that link, awesome ;D
As a side note CPO Caldwell (wife's Grandfather) also was part of the crew to bring HMAS Melbourne to Aussie from the UK, prior to her comission in RAN

FlyNavy
Have always enjoyed the mystery behind the Sydney, great to see it solved.
Of interest (somewhat off topic -my apologies) you made mention of the Shropshire, my wife's grandfather served on her during that time (was a sparky). ;D
Most people here in NZ would never have heard of the Shropshire

Ah Helicopters and turbines I recall as a young cadet standing a the rear doors of No 6 Hangar at Wigram (yeah a few moons ago now) watching an Iroquois start up... typical whine etc as turbine began to spool up then suddenly an almighty flash of flame shot out of the exhaust, went the whole length of the tail boom. All I can say was wow!!!! Turbines can have their moments ;D

And it would be these same reprobates who would scream blue murder if the UK was attacked, " were are our armed forces" Then again could be a careful staging by 5th columnists? My father told me of an incident late 1950's (1958-9??) where a group called bogies and weges (don't know if correct spelling) had beaten up some RNZAF personnel as well as Army/Navy personnel in Auckland City According to my father the police were told by the collective armed forces, who at night walked through the city in pairs/ groups and any bogie/wege found was given a shorn look hair cut and no doubt some bloodied noses/balck eyes etc etc (you get the picture). As a result no Armed Forces personnel were ever touched again!! Perhaps the RAF co-joint with Army/Navy/Marines could visit these sites and aggressively persuade these reprobates to "let sleeping Dogs lie"

I believe the surface tension in the stream of water will play a part in going around a curved surface, along with velocity of h2o(works in trees/plants) Air going over the surface of a wing doesn't have surface tension but the general vacuum effect would be similar (in my book) Did bernoulli in physic at uni, has it's part to play but would not entirely answer the question of airflow/lift Don't know if it's apparent but both Bernoulli and Coanda used water/fluid to test their theories (going on memory here)

Dave Realistically comes down to one word "Intent".
If the woman was on board armed and was prepared to carry out her "Intent" then it would be classified as a Hijacking.
(Part of any Enforcement defence; intent is taken as to what the perpertraitor entended to do to succeed in their endeavours, any premeditation prior to the offence committed)

Another socialist made a like comment many many years ago
"No enemy bomber can reach the Ruhr. If one reaches the Ruhr, my name is not Goering. You may call me Meyer."
Those in power really need to realise that these things can be done by those, not fuelled by religious fervor.
Yes things will be tougher at airports.
I travelled to Wellington, yesterday and a guy had to put his lap top through the xray. When I went through I had to tell them my cell phone was in my carry on.
Annette King on 3 news said Quote The same thing could happen on a bus unquote, probably true but the reality of the fact is it has happened in New Zealand in a airliner!!!
If one person got away with it (knives on board) who might try it next?

That's an awsome story.
Guys like O'Hare, Thatch etc were run of the mill type guys that when the going got tough, the tough got going!!
I guess also that Pearl Harbor was still fresh in everyones mind and that can be a powerful motivator.
Obviously Easy Eddie must hve had some impact on his son also, which given his own personal life is nice to see.
Finally I think the Grumman F4F, O'Hare would have been flying, gives ample testament to the design and build of that aircraft.
There's a quote I read some time ago that read" Thank God, Grumman (and I can't remember the last piece)" which I think sums it up.

Sounds like a sub atomic particle called a neutrino.
Known to exist in the universe has no known atomic mass, known to go through solid things, almost undetectable, no known real use
I wonder having read the above thread if gravity causes these sub atomic particles to some how gravitate together to form a compound called (I think any way) politicium
Need to get into my sub atomics and nut this one out what relevance does politicium and governmetium have in common

Wife's brother in law was in Iraq. Told me how the Head honchos of these groups rely on things like P/ice etc to get these people to carry out these attacks. I saw a real time footage of a terrorist walking out with an RPG to blow away a US army Bradley the terrorist went to aim, the Bradley opened fire (you could see the rounds kicking up around him) some of the rounds knocked him onto his haunches (he should have been dead) he tried to get back up to aim his RPG when the Bradley fired again, this time totally wiping him out. Little wonder when they are so high to their eyeballs that they make mistakes. I know this sounds really coarse, but in reality better them than innocent people

Hi all
My wife found this on a Trademe Board, just had to share it with you ;D ;D
Helen Clark visited a primary school classroom which was in the middle of discussion related to words and their meanings.
The teacher asked Prime Minister if she would like to lead the discussion on the word 'tragedy', so the leader asked the class for an example of a tragedy.
One little boy stood up and offered "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs him over and kills him, that would be a tragedy." "No" says Helen, "that would be an accident."
A little girl raised her hand "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy." "I'm afraid not" explained the Prime Minister "that's what we call a great loss."
The room went silent. No other children volunteered. Helen searched the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?"
Finally at the back of the room a small boy raised his hand. In a quiet voice he said "If a RNZAF plane, carrying you Prime Minister, were struck by a friendly fire missile and blown to smithereens that would be tragedy."
"Fantastic" said Helen. "That's right. Can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?" "Well" said the boy "because it certainly wouldn't be a 'great loss' and it probably wouldn't be an 'accident' either."

Japan will never admit that they have done wrong, it's part of their mentality.
My wife has taught Japanese students for a number of years and everything must be done the "Japanese way", she visited Japan a few years ago and was able to go to Hiroshima City and visit the A bomb site. There is a memorial stating "that this must never happen again" but no comment that it was Japans fault in the first place.
As a side line "Enola Gay" the B 29 that dropped the A bomb on Hiroshima, when it's restoration was complete the placard in front of it was "PCed" down so as not to offend the Japanese, no mention of the fact that the A bomb was dropped to save lives (both Japanese/Allied (loads of US Vets were understandably annoyed).
Tojo is buried in the war veterans shrine and given hero worship
Some years ago a leading editorial (can't remember the name) made the comment that Japan still has empire building on the agenda, obviously it can't declare war any more so it buys up land/companies in foreign lands
New face of Nippon same old agenda.....
