I'm glad they have been caught Personally the words lynch and mob with tree and rope came to mind originally I think however that since these youth think so lightly of their own history, I hope the judge at their trial will be inspired to make them volunteer to work as part of their punishment and the restorative process at MOTAT on some of these things they have sought to destroy. In doing so help them realize that this our history and it's priceless, and needs to be preserved for posterity

Peter Excellent photos ;D Re The Avenger, the last I saw of it was in a building to the left of the current placement of the workshop (about May 07) If you follow the gravel road around it was in about the second/third building (building has folding doors) Corsair67 The new building is "supposed" to start around March this year, and will directly butt onto the current hangar and won't be finished until @ 2010. As to where they will place all the aircraft? well we'll have to wait and see, there's not alot of room left!!! During a very recent trip to MOTAT, overheard some workers commenting on the fact someone screwed up the plans a little, as the tram line was supposed to go right around the back of Keith Park

Hi Corsair67 Thanks for that ;D The reason I ask about the fairing, is Peter Mossong's site shows diagrams sans fairing (which imo looks much nicer) rnzaf.hobbyvista.com/14sqcol.htmregards Alan

Hi Peter/Dave
The Corsair, do you know if it was a F4U-1D or an FG-1D?
Also a curious note and if you might know the answer, the small crescent shaped fairing/bump aft of the tail wheel was this for this aircraft or was it a Kiwi RNZAF mod?
Reason I ask, is I want to build a 1/32 Corsair FG-1D (post war) and want to get it correct
TIA
Alan

Being a relative newbie (is that a word??) I have to agree with the sentiments expressed thus far. One of the reasons I joined this forum is the manner in which the members come across, gentlemanly and eager to acknowledge the positive aspects of another members comments/models etc. I know people are only human and each of us has personal points of views on one thing or another and while vigorous dialog can be a good thing it only takes a comment taken out of context to start the sabres rattling and amidst the verbal clashing some one gets hurt/disaffects Keep up the good work Dave this is a realy nice forum to hang out in ;D Alan

Hi all Slightly off topic (sorry Dave), the TAF units, I know they started flying the P 51D's @ 1952. As I understand it, the TAF units were more day to day operations as opposed to their equivalents of today (territorial/reserves who generally do weekends and fortnightly periods during the year). (please correct me if I'm wrong) My reason for asking is I have a 1/32 scale P 51D on order and have got the markings for No 1 (Auckland) Squadron TAF, hoping to build later this year. I like to learn a little about the planes/squadrons who flew them. Thanks Alan

71 years young and going strong Per ardua ad astra — "Through struggle to the stars." We haven't made it to the stars (yet) and the force has had to struggle on occasion (more often than not...) but there are myriads of men and women who have worn/wear the uniform, served/serve with honor and were/are no fools, well done RNZAF

Hi Rocco I would explain it this way......incessant off on a topic tangent ramblings, of a (up until now) National supporter who is some what cheesed off at the way things are going and having some what higher expectations of John Key than that which seem to/may materialize (yes as you may surmise don't think highly of the current incumbent governing party either). Having worked for a government dept and feed up with the litany of stuff that feeds down making one feel like a right royal mushroom..... Probably doesn't answer your question re Shiply/Key but I might just let sleeping dogs lie on this one

Dave one thing that I have learned from Public Service is that it's not what the Majority want (which should be the case) it's about the personal agenda /Perception(theirs)/PR Spin. Point in case is the recent "smacking bill" vast majority of Kiwi's were against it and in so being, it should not have gone on, but it did. when you get some power mad cronie who wants to make their mark on the world, it's amazing what they can "persuade" Ministers to table.
Public perception can be determined by PR Spin, how do think that clown Lange and co managed to have US warships banned, use of words like nuclear & explosion in same sentence will move people to react the way you want...
When Clark and cronies scrapped the combat wing the word agenda (conveniently couched in terms of cost cutting) comes to the fore, I'll wager Clarke had it in for the air force long before elections.
PR spin can work wonders Why do think Shiply voiced her opinion against Clark's scrapping of the combat wing? It gave her brownie point in the public eye, immaterial of her real agenda.
Lo and behold what should come out later on "National will not re-instate the Air Combat Wing"
Some PR cronie most likely had the National party presidents ear and conveniently helped them realize that most Kiwi's don't want a new combat wing and so it becomes policy (in a manner of speaking).
Where do they get this from? Opinion polls!! I had some person a few months ago phone me up re National and my opinions on their policy. Interestingly enough, the questions were worded just so, to give a desired answer, so that when the term "Public Opinion" is used they can use the data from such opinion polls to verify/substantiate their claims.
Money certainly has some thing to do with it but alot is as above
People sit in offices in Wellington and write policy, they can couch agenda into these policies quite easily (in a matter of speaking).
I'agree with you that terrorism can affect our country but we are isolated at present and the current incumbent liars have managed to side step issues like supporting the war in Afghanistan/Iraq because they know NZ would take a hit.
Why do you think the Bali bombings occurred, and so many Aussies died (not so many Kiwis) Al Queda sending a message to the Aussies stay out and to the Kiwis, make sure you keep staying out
It's about public perception, guess what? The current incumbents have suckered this people seriously on a number of issues

Rocco comments make for some interesting discussion The point is New Zealand is isolated, and the threat of terrorism is remote from out an side point granted, however as we have seen, not from inside (re woman who hijacked flight recently). Yes it would take years to retrain/get combat wing up to status. So on an so forth. we lost the combat wing because the incumbent pm had an axe to grind with the Air force. (good old fashioned communist purge, disguised as a cost cutting measure) Any socialist government who is in power (Soviets were primo uno in this) will ultimately take out the air force, why? In any attempt to take over power, the air force would be powerless to take out army combat units. The air force represents a force of spoiled people who should be deprived to privilege the army (who again ultimately would protect the pm) The current Australian pm will keep the combat wing of the RAAF going to keep on good terms with the US, and in his best interest as they have landed a good trade deal. National obviously have been told by their PR people that to re-invent the combat wing would be politically disastrous, so yeah, side with Labour (the same thing would have happed when US warships were banned, pr people would have been key instruments in this coming to pass). Reality is this if New Zealand wants to be involved in the World arena then we need the toys to do so, if we want to be taken seriously. Ultimately the people of this land need to make the decision and relay it to the liars we have to vote in, do we want to be involved in the world (and pay the price to do so) or do we want to become isolationist (and pay that price, such as we have with the ANZUS treaty) Crazy part about all this is as an "allied Nation" with the US we could obtain equipment through a military assistance program (similar to Israel etc) we probably could get our F 16's etc for a fraction of the price. But as we all know, the current incumbent group of liars hates the US..... Some of these comments may be disagreeable with some, I have studied modern history, and come to a good understanding of how socialism does these things, and the people of this country (in general) just don't see the ramifications of what has happed and what will continue to happen. Though I probably come across as pro US, I also understand who really holds the balance of power on capital hill, and it's not the President!! Regards Alan

Mike,
Those are awsome photos, thanks for sharing ;D ;D
The hangar at Hachinoe must be huge especially with that type of lattice work and easily two P 3's parked there.

The council may well allow that BUT!! The council doesn't force these yahoos to buy in these areas where the noise may be a problem, it's still their choice to buy land/home there end of story

Whenuapai has been there since WWII, Hobsonville even before then. Why then did these reprobates buy a house in the area if they knew aircraft would be flying around night or day??? A similar type thing happed for the speed way at Western Springs, if the racing noise raises above a certain decibel range the racing has to stop. How long have they raced there on Saturday nights? Problem, home owning whiners who again knew racing occurred there when they bought their houses

I know this is flogging an old horse but if we still had the A4's, a few rounds of 20 mike mike across the bow.. well... that's enough to make em heave to.... Re blowing them out of the water, are our P 3's even allowed to carry such ordnance by the current poliburo? Good on our guys for doing such a superb job ;D ;D ;D

When (then) President Clinton opened the doors to gay people being allowed into the US armed forces, unit commanders etc were required to display a purple triangle on their desk signifying that the commanders' office was a gay "safe" place..... Discipline was and ever will be the only effective way for a force commander to lead (which ever) Army, navy, air force, marines etc and fight the fight. Certainly locking up a recruit in a bin and beating on it for hours is down right wrong, and does nothing for discipline. But in a battle scenario a unit leader won't be able to sweet talk the troops especially if they need to do some thing hard Band of Brothers comes to mind (fight for Carentan) where the officers are yelling at/shoving the men to advance into the town. The PC brigade would have them up on charges for abuse... not forgetting fighting the PC way would probably end up with mega casualties.....

I know this is a little off topic, speaking of things/goings on at bases (Wigram, I believe). When my Dad & Mom were not long married, they went to the base evening ball (dress uniform/ball gowns etc) during the course of the evening my dad went to get some refreshments, and while away an airman (base fire fighter I believe) started to hit on my mom and asked her home....... Needles to say it soon got around the base next morning that Bob Willoughby was looking for the guy who tried to take his wife home.... As the story goes the airman asked for a transfer to another station rather than risk the wraith of a very angry Bob Willoughby... I relate this as it was related to me...... no airmen were hurt or other wise in the telling of this story ;D
