Thanks for posting that - great stuff Looks like most of it was shot at Piva. They must have been bl**dy hot in all that gear, especially the guy debriefing in his hat [especially for the camera I guess ]- I was flying around there in '70-71 and it was shorts weather. Helped reopen a short section of one of the coastal Piva strips but looking at Google Earth it's now been recovered by the vegetation. Just reread Miles King's autobiography in which he recounts his ditching off Piva and long swim ashore..they were made of different stuff those days!

Dave.. they could have but memory eludes me. He started taking photos around there from about 1933 -39. Sorry I can't be more helpful. thomarse - also thought we may have been from the same era...you are obviously are a better detective than me as I'm scratching my head ! Fancy running into Kevin...that is a name from the past!

Just a thought - this is not some holiday reading bought at an airport but another book from one of NZ's leading military aviation historians...I know from experience that he will never make a fortune from the royalties.

Knew George in the 60s when as a young lad used to go along to AHSNZ meetings...
A great guy..as I remember he was a 'wharfie' and came out to NZ at the end of WWII - story he told was that when he was working on the wharves with Bruce James [who had learnt with the RNZAF right at the wars end] he convinced him to do his CPL and Bruce then went on to be the CFI at Wgtn Aero Club as well as a CAD examiner...
When I left Wgtn in '69 for my first flying job I sold him all my aviation paraphernalia including photos taken by my Uncle at Rongotai in the '30s...at least they went to a good home.
Nice to know that he has an appropriate headstone.

Great colour photo of BLL at Kaiteriteri Beach Nelson in 1956 on the rear cover of 'Taking Off'....
Iconic shot of NZ beach life in those days too...men in long shorts, dogs ,kids, women in rolled up shorts and even a Box Brownie...

Great photos...very nostalgic to see 'Herby' the chief engineer in Wellington driving the 'windbreak', third photo from the bottom...
Earned enough there as a loader/refueler to pay for a CPL in the mid 60's.

I must be really out of touch but isn't there a 'Freedom of Information' Act in NZ...an accident that happened in 1963 still being 'sensitive'.......?
When working up there years ago I recall somebody mentioning this.
A history of civil aviation in Fiji, "Fiji's Aviation Story", has been published by Maurice Mc Greal that may have details in it.

thomarse & Pool guy...thanks for the replies... davejodel...nice photo...did some hours in CKP but long before that colour scheme. The Polaroids did indeed supplement the income...B&W to start with then colour...the shot of the 185s I posted on the Franz is a Polaroid [copied with a digital camera as they don't scan very well...] Edited to add that: come on guys - there must be more photos of "NZ's National Aircraft" around and the strips they operate/d into
