Yes thanks Dave - had forgotten that.
My memory of the photo I saw is that the Vulcan and the flyer were heading in the same direction and the Vulcan's shadow was right over the Flyer but hey, that's 51 years ago...

Three aircraft in the air right now apparently doing extensive aerial photography - C180 JCW, C402 MAP and the ol' faithful Aero Commander CDK

From about the same time there was also a classic shot taken from the Vulcan showing its shadow over the Kingston Flyer

I see the Taupo-based C208 jump ship JMP is flat-out on just the one route Palmie to Wairoa and return. Anyone know what she's carrying?

I'm surprised we haven't seen more of the C130s
Unless the runway at Wairoa was compromised in some way, a Herc would eat it

I'm afraid that decision was inevitable.
I'm also afraid to say that we have only seen the tip of the proverbial iceberg as far as the Hawke's Bay event is concerned and I fear there is very disturbing news to unfold. Talking to a customer in Napier today, they are saying that damage-wise it's worse than the 1931 earthquake but I think that may be a bit OTT

That's right MM - under the name "Aeropayne Company" or similar. IIRC one of those Pawnee 150s was part of the fleet - BOU perhaps?
What happened to Dudley's derelict airframes?

I was around in those early years and recall AKM well but never knew they were ever associated with ALD. I would imagine that the Club was instrumental in forming the Otaki Airfield; when I was a kid there was a hangar there which seemed pretty old even then, and in it lived the Tiger ASG. At one stage ASG belonged to D (Dudley?) Payne who I guess was the Aero Club President and IIRC later moved to Hawke's Bay and then to the North Shore I think. Prior to that ASG was owned by a Levin dentist Malcolm Cunninghame but whether it lived at Otaki I can't say
The Moth Minor normally spent the week in what we called the "Cal Flight" hangar at PP and went up to Otaki on weekend days.

$5000 for boarding like it but only $3000 for getting like it when on board? Can't see the difference myself

I see on Flightaware that southbound Regional flights in the Central North are flying at 12100 ft, much lower than usual

That's Bob Tremaine - he was a earlier pioneer of back-blocks aviation in Taupo. His activities would be worthy of recording too Bob Tremaine was mentioned in Bruce Gavin's "Heartland High Flyer" and I've also found him mentioned in a couple of books about trout fishing at Taupo. Now I find one Robert Tremaine, 59, of Taupo, in the passenger list of NZ901 (Erebus)

I have to say we're on the same wavelength zkdex - goes back to your asking about Ohiwa and others. Te Whakao was originally "The Te Whakao Clearing" to the East of Lake Taupo and way in behind Motutere. In an early venture, the famous Ron Connell first owned an Auster AYO (thanks Peter) and then the rebuilt Cessna 180 CWL (ex BDB and back.) The 180 was signwritten "Te Whakao Tourist Co Courtesy Plane" or similar and flew hunters in to the clearing from Taupo. This is circa 1970. In those days the clearing was surrounded by tall manuka and native regrowth but has long since vanished into the huge Lake Taupo Forest It's the light blue bit at the back of the Forest Map here: www.ltft.co.nz/land-forest/I'd be pleased to hear any more.....

One exception appears to have been WAC which in the sixties painted Chipmunk ZK-BSV and PA18 ZK-BQN in Wellingtons yellow and black colours. Breathing life back into an old thread, I seem to recall that Wellington's C172 BWW was yellow, black and white too

Interesting when you compare this excitement over 156 engines to the ultimate production of 32,000!

Looks like there's one on Bellevue Road. I'd never heard of it either. It would appear that there's a good strip plus large hangar with a concrete pad outside. I'm pretty sure that Ivan owned a number of aircraft over the years didn't he?
