I work as a volunteer for the IWM in London & can confirm the museum is free. So spend a couple of grand to get yourselves over here to save yourself the entrance fee, money well spent!!

I found the aircrew picture very interesting, yes it is certainly of WWII vintage, & judging by the kit being worn, circa 1941. The points to look for that identify the date are; the 1941 pattern mae wests with the fitted stole, B type flying helmets & the figure 3rd from left is wearing the Irvin harness suit, the oral inflation tube over the left shoulder & twin zips being a key identification features.

Just received a copy of Errol's book in the post today, the first copy in England!! Without going into detail as i'm sure you'll all be buying the book yourself, New Zealands first airman who saw "action in the air" was Hawkes Bay born Hugh Lambert Reilly. He is documented as flying operationally as an observer in 24th Sept 1914 & almost certainly earlier. Kerry

Yet they were abaord Achilles in 1941-42.
That makes sense as i have 2 RAF Tee Emm magazines dated June & April 1942 both stamped "700 SQUADRON*H.M.S.ACHILLES*"

I met the founder & editor of the Low Blower & Octopus 8 a couple of years ago on a visit back to NZ. When interveiwed, annoyingly he couldn't remember how many issues were printed of each. When i have time i'll dig out my copy of CC & let you know what issue it is. K

Thanks for the speedy response guys, i found the interveiw very informative Dave. 700 Catapult Sqd had to be the smallest operational unit in NZ military flying history!!
On a different subject Dave, i must provide you with copies of "The Corsair Courier" "Low Blower" and "Octopus 8" 2010 could be the year...
Thanks again, Kerry

Strictly speaking i guess this posting should of been placed in the Naval section of this site, if anyone agrees strongly with this i'll move it. My question is, how many aircrew served on board HMS Achilles at any one time flying it's single Walrus?? Thanks in advance, Kerry

Having Tuesday off work i dragged the girlfriend down to Trafalgar Sq to see the still veiled statue. I'm also lucky enough to work close to the square so was able to attend the un-veiling today which took place after a fly past, speeches & a short film about 4.30. Great to see him finally honoured.
