To fill in that annoying time between contracts I took myself overseas for a bit of a rest. While travelling I took some photos of aeroplanes which might be of interest to forum members. I have been able to identify most of them from my copy of "The Big Boy's Book Of Airplanes (Updated - Now in Color!)". If I have made any mistakes I'm sure you will let me know. Part 1. A Sopwith 1-and-a-half Strutter A World War 1 Messerschmitt. One of the brightly painted Fokker Triplanes of Ricthofen's Circus. Aaahhh..deHavilland. The DH.5. The inward retracting wheels, Merlin V-12 up front and the British roundels on the wings are the defining characteristics of the Hawker Hurricane. The two seat, radial-engined biplane common around the world, the Boeing Stearman. A Heinkel He.111. Cheers, Brett

Part 2. The timeless DC-3. The T-6 training aircraft A BAE 146. Stealth Fighter...the F.117. The unmistakable lines of the Concorde. A DHC Beaver. Judging by the markings this is an old medevac aircraft, but I couldn't figure out where the doctor and the patient sat. Here is another of those medevac planes. Someone has crudely painted over the emergency markings with black paint Cheers, Brett

Part 3. "My First P-40" - by Hasbro. Despite the number on the side, I am sure this is a P-40. Easily identified by the shark's mouth on the front. There is nothing more staunch than arriving at an airshow in your club's Piper Tomahawk. I'll bet none of you have ever seen one of these before, let alone see one fly! According to the commentator, this is a very specialised aircraft that is only used to transport rugby teams! This aircraft evidently played a major role in the "Star Trek" TV series. A wolf in sheep's clothing. Judging by the twin exhausts I'd say it is probably a V8. I think this was some kind of race. You know, where everyone has the same type of vehicle and it comes down to driver skill? A glider act to fill in the gaps in the program. Cheers, Brett.

Part 4. There must have been a big emergency because all of these medevac planes were heading in the same direction. The famous "bent-winged bird", the Corsair. This one is in need of some repair. Another Corsair. They were everywhere. There must be thousands of them. The remains of a seaplane. I was unable to identify this from my plane book, but there is a picture of it in my dictionary under the definition of "Hideous". This must be very rare because it wasn't in any of my books. Going by the angle, I presume this is the terror of the Blitzkrieg - the Stuka! Cheers, Brett

The famous "bent-winged bird", the Corsair. This one is in need of some repair. Nothing wrong with your copy of "The Big Boy's Book Of Airplanes" Brett - in fact I've managed to find a photo of the famous V-12 powered Corsair ;D

I saw the B-17 alright. Just couldn't figure out where they put the 10 crewmen for those long-range bombing missions over Germany. ;D Junkers Ju 87R-4 - Deutsches Technik Museum, Berlin, Germany Junkers Ju 87B - Auto & Technik Museum Sinsheim, Sinsheim, Germany Working on the basis that every single caption is incorrect, does anybody want to try and identify the rest? Cheers, Brett

Built by SAAB - but designed by IKEA: the people who can maximise the storage possibilities for even the smallest spaces! ;D
Photo 5: Morane-Saulnier MS 406.
Photo 8: Li 2 - Licence built Russian C-47/DC 3.

The list so far...
Part 1. 1 2 3 Sopwith Triplane (replica made for a movie) 4 5 Morane-Saulnier MS 406 6 Polikarpov I-15bis 7 CASA 2.111B
Part 2. 8 Lisunov Li 2 9 Yakovlev Yak-18 10 Ilyushin Il-76 11 ? - MAKS 2009 International Aviation & Space Salon, Zhukovsky, Russia 12 Tupolev Tu-144D 13 Max Holste MH 1521 Broussard 14 Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 15 Messerschmitt Bf 109G-4
Part 3. 16 Link Trainer. 17 “Sehested” (Willemoes class Torpedo Boat – Guided Missile Boat), Royal Danish Naval Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark. 18 Piper PA38 Tomahawk 19 Polikarpov I-16 20 Grumman TBM-3R Avenger 21 AVRO Vulcan 22 23 Suhkoi Su-27 (Russian Knights) 24 Messerschmitt Me163 (unpowered replica)
Part 4. 25 Northrop F-5E (Patrouille Suisse) 26 Junkers Ju 87R-4 - Deutsches Technik Museum, Berlin, Germany 27 Junkers Ju 87B - Auto & Technik Museum Sinsheim, Sinsheim, Germany 28 Mitsubishi A6M5 Reisen (Replica of the remains held by the IWM, London) 29 Fairey Gannet AS.4 30 Reims Cessna F172P (Mathias Rust’s Red Square plane) 31 Piper L-18C
Classic Wings stole my thunder with #7, although the markings might have been a give-away.
I expected the Li-2 to cause a few problems, but it was the first one out of the box!
I have no idea what #11 is. It was in the static displays without a display board, so whoever built it wasn't owning up to it. It was incredibly crude, and looked to be made out of old beach chairs and fence posts. It was definitely a non-flyer. Maybe a movie prop?
I've put in the details for #17. It's a boat, so lets not waste time on it.
#18 had the correct caption. Darn! I posted the wrong photo. It should have been a Beechcraft Skipper.
#22 is not a Typhoon. Sorry. Try again.
Cheers,
Brett

#22 is a Saab Gripen. You can just make out the Canards in amongst the vapour.
